Dana Kerstein – Ghost

On my iPod right now is Ghost, the latest CD from singer Dana Kerstein. You can get this through her MySpace Page for a paltry ten quid, or indeed any other currency, through the magic of PayPal. The music is hard to categorize – the nearest I can get is late-night modern folk, tinged with blues, soul and a hint of ethnic, innit, fabulous for falling asleep in the bath with. Dana’s voice is rich and keening, set against impeccably made, atmospheric backdrops by her longtime collaborator, guitarist Mark Johns.

OK, I’ll fess up. Dana is the daughter of a very good friend of mine: but I wouldn’t mention this if I didn’t think her CD completely worthy of your attention. Dana and Mark have been treading the boards for years, in between recording music for TV shows and commercials and so on: you’ve probably heard Dana’s voice a million times without realizing it.
Dana has had the courage to plough her own furrow. The fact that her music isn’t easy to place has probably worked against her, in a world of X-Factor soul clones. This is a shame. If this woman isn’t a major star soon there’ll be no justice. You owe your ear’oles: get her album now.
