  1. Brian Clegg says:

I don’t understand the problem with this. Clearly the duck was not fed on any meat.

  2. cromercrox says:

As in corn-fed chicken, I suppose?

  3. M@ says:

Not as dodgy as this menu I found in Portugal. Check out the kid’s section.

  4. Stephen says:

I was a bit slow off the mark on this one. At first I thought, “Food for vegetarian ducks – how drole!”

And then I looked again and thought, “Oh, I see what he was getting at…!”

  5. Stephen says:

Good find M@ – but what is “Tofu ‘Bras’ Stile”, which I saw just above the kids section? Do you eat it or wear it?

  6. My favourite menu item seen in Portugal was “pork groin or beef groin”. We assumed they meant loin, but opted for the safer option (steak) just in case.

Also seen in Bruges: “The chef’s own muscles” (I kid you not) and “Tepid lobster at the style of the Grandfather”.

  7. ricardipus says:

Henry – I’ve eaten “Mock Duck” (just imagine the chuckling at that menu) in a Vietnamese restaurant in… wait for it… you’ll never guess…

    Minneapolis.

It was actually quite tasty. Made of tofu, of course.

One day, I must take a photo of Toronto’s “Happy Meat Market” for you… or perhaps the “Hong Fatt Barbeque Meat Store” (if either of those still exist – I’ve been meaning to snap them for years). The “King’s Noodle” restaurant is usually worth a giggle, too.

  8. Jenny says:

I thought ducks were actually vegan until I spotted one slurping a latte down at my local Starbucks.

  9. cromercrox says:

What a lovely haul, from everyone – especially M@. Great stuff!

@Jenny – I used to keep ducks as a boy and they are pretty unfussy about what they eat. The chickens, too, at the Maison Des Girrafes, hoover up all kinds of scraps. Ducks and chickens are especially fond of slugs – a problem that’s almost disappeared in our garden thanks to the free-ranging chickens. However, I was cautioned by a smallholder to keep chickens away from slugs, as slugs can carry a fluke that’s harmful to chickens. Who knew?

  10. Jenny says:

“Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite ‘em…”

  11. rpg says:

    They do? Pesky little blighters.

  12. cromercrox says:

All part of Mr Darwin’s tangled bank, right in our backyard.

  13. Frank says:

In my (rare and long ago) excursions into vegetarianishness I eschewed (rather than chewed) such faux-meat. I’d rather have non-meat that tastes of good honest non-meatiness rather than some falsely flavoured, falsely-textured stuff. These days I’d rather just have meat, of course. Hmmm, roast duck.

  14. ricardipus says:

Frank – I’m with you on that. I can remember the first veggie hotdog I ate. I was expecting something delicious, with lentils and chickpeas and whatnot. What I got was a hotdog that tasted disappointingly like a hotdog, except with slightly the wrong texture and none of the meaty, salty goodness.

People. There’s no pleasing some of ‘em, especially me.

  15. cromercrox says:

Quorn is rather growing on me. Metaphorically, or course.
