Vegas

I’ve just arrived in Vegas for the 71st Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. This is the view from my hotel bedroom window. No, seriously.

I’ve never been to Vegas before, and as for first impressions, I have to agree with the several people who have said it’s like Disneyland for grownups. I had expected it to be tacky – it’s not. It is, though, vulgar, but in such a gloriously, over-the-top, devil-may-care sense that one is thrust through the ghastliness barrier and out the other side into something that’s … well, rather good, actually. Notwithstanding inasmuch as which, my colleague Ms J W of London sent me this link – for the well-heeled Vegas-bound paleontologist with everything except taste. Well, I see a session calls. Toodle, and moreover, pip.

I can’t really believe I am doing this, but I’m going to a Barry Manilow concert tomorrow night. It’s serendipity. I’m at the Paris Las Vegas. Barry is playing at the Paris Las Vegas. I got a ticket, and … Oh Mandy.

I love when sciency conferences go to Vegas. It’s a beautiful place, and if you don’t want to do the sin city stuff there’s plenty of other fun things to do. I’m a big fan of the aquarium at Mandalay Bay.

I’d've liked to have gone to that aquarium if I’d had the time. However, after a hard day of lectures and schmoozing and learning about eye-popping new science which, if I told you about it, I’d have to kill you, I relaxed with my good friend Barry Manilow, whose show was marvellous. Another plus point about Vegas is the food. A colleague told me that Vegas is to chefs what Memphis is to musicians. My recommendation is Olives at the Bellagio for very inventive and stylish Italian food.
