Yes, I know, I know, World Poetry Day was a few days ago now, and as you read this it’s probably World Broccoli Day or World Make-Friends-With-A-Unicycling-Girrafe Day, but at the age of 59 and 11\/12ths I’m a bit slow on the old unicycle<\/del> release of calcium from intracellular stores<\/del> uptake and it took me a while to retrieve this poem I wrote some years ago on the occasion of the confirmation of the existence of the Higgs Boson. So here it is. With apologies to Hilaire Belloc.<\/p>\n

Ahem.<\/p>\n

Clears throat.<\/p>\n

THE BOSON<\/p>\n

The Boson is so very small<\/p>\n

You cannot make it out at all<\/p>\n

Though scientists have money on<\/p>\n

Its presence in the Tevatron.<\/p>\n

Notwithstanding the concern<\/p>\n

Of colleagues working hard at CERN<\/p>\n

Who hope the Boson might emerge<\/p>\n

Triumphant, from a mighty splurge<\/p>\n

of hadrons which, when they collide<\/p>\n

Release their secrets, locked inside.<\/p>\n

Why all this fuss, I say? Alas!<\/p>\n

Without it, and we’d have no mass<\/p>\n

We’d float away, like thistledown,<\/p>\n

Drifting high above the ground.<\/p>\n

The ground itself would fly away<\/p>\n

And nothing much would deign to stay<\/p>\n

Attracted to its bounden mate.<\/p>\n

We’d be in such a sorry state!<\/p>\n

But hold! We cannot be so free.<\/p>\n

There is still much uncertainty,<\/p>\n

For scientists tell us we must wait<\/p>\n

For sigmas to accumulate.<\/p>\n

Oh let us never, ever doubt<\/p>\n

What nobody is sure about.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
