{"id":209,"date":"2009-08-02T08:07:34","date_gmt":"2009-08-02T08:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/erikacule\/2009\/08\/02\/conference_call\/"},"modified":"2025-01-30T07:49:11","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T07:49:11","slug":"conference_call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/erikacule\/2009\/08\/02\/conference_call\/","title":{"rendered":"Conference Call"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is coming up for a year ago that I attended my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/natureconferences\/sciblog2008\/index.html\">first conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was aware, when I registered for SciBlog08, that this would not be a conventional convention. From <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/groups\/sciblog2008\/forum\/topics\/1905\">being asked what should be discussed<\/a> to a <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/groups\/sciblog2008\/forum\/topics\/1851\">slightly unusual social programme<\/a><\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3131\/2808153518_872fe498e1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<strong><em>Someday, all conferences will be like this<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SciBlog08 was certainly a Web2.0 gathering.<\/p>\n<p>But the <em>next<\/em> two events I attended did not fit with what I imagined a conference would be like, either.<\/p>\n<p>There was the relentless enthusiasm of the <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/erikacule\/blog\/2008\/11\/16\/igem-2008\">iGEM 2008 Jamboree<\/a>. Then there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayer.com\/en\/homepage.aspx\">Bayer<\/a> &#8216;s Press Forum, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayer.com\/en\/2008-12-12-press-forum-perspective-on-innovation.aspx\">Perspective on Innovation<\/a>, at which I witnessed the nature of questions from the floor when they come from those with a journalistic, rather than a scientific, motive.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I have been to a couple more meetings, both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioinformatics.ic.ac.uk\/masamb\/\">at home<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mas.ncl.ac.uk\/~nmf16\/may09\/\">away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are some elements that these conferences have in common. There is being starstruck at seeing someone <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staff.ncl.ac.uk\/d.j.wilkinson\/smfsb\/index.html\">whose work you admire<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mas.ncl.ac.uk\/~nmf16\/may09\/papers\/Wilkinson.pdf\">presenting<\/a>. There is struggling to follow some talks, and being captivated by others. There is <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/groups\/londonevents\/forum\/topics\/1902\">conference paraphernalia<\/a> and there are nametags, which for some inexplicable reason I retain.<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_SPEoWFy-qc4\/SnVILIC7N4I\/AAAAAAAAAMM\/dF8GapNK0tQ\/s288\/DSC00244.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"216\" \/><br \/>\n<strong><em>What&#8217;s my name again?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel privileged to have attended what I believe is 2009&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiswick.demon.co.uk\/CISB09.html\">most exclusive gathering<\/a>, which came with what is undoubtedly the best conference hospitality I have witnessed in my short conference-attending career to date. The programme was infinitely flexible, incorporating local <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/henrygee\/blog\/2009\/02\/27\/cromer-is-so-bracing-pier-review\">cuisine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/henrygee\/blog\/2009\/03\/02\/cromer-is-so-bracing-sunday\">culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The freebies were exemplary.
