{"id":2947,"date":"2014-02-27T11:33:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-27T11:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/mindthegap\/?p=2947"},"modified":"2014-02-27T11:33:18","modified_gmt":"2014-02-27T11:33:18","slug":"in-which-i-admire-their-honesty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/mindthegap\/2014\/02\/27\/in-which-i-admire-their-honesty\/","title":{"rendered":"In which I admire their honesty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to Mateja Erdani Kreft of the University of Ljubljana and Horst Robenek from the University of M\u00fcnster for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0038509\">telling it like it is<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lablit\/12812005345\/player\/b95de81220\" height=\"186\" width=\"500\"  frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t often see such candor in the methods section of your local journal article &#8211; so much so that recently, the #overlyhonestmethods hashtag <a href=\"http:\/\/storify.com\/BeckiePort\/overlyhonestmethods\">went viral on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jokes aside, this got me to thinking: how much of our knowledge of biology is influenced by the distinctly unbiological 5-days-on, 2-days-off rhythm of our investigative patterns (assuming that turbo-gunner 24\/7 lab commando types are in the distinct minority amongst boffins)? If cell culture experiments were fed every day, would a different outcome result? How much does periodicity matter? Is it a phenomenon worth studying in its own right? <\/p>\n<p>The mind boggles.
