{"id":130,"date":"2008-05-19T02:23:06","date_gmt":"2008-05-19T02:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/05\/19\/scientifiques_sans_frontieres\/"},"modified":"2008-05-19T02:23:06","modified_gmt":"2008-05-19T02:23:06","slug":"scientifiques_sans_frontieres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/05\/19\/scientifiques_sans_frontieres\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientifiques sans frontieres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Academy of Sciences and the United Nations Millennium Project have launched a <a href=\"http:\/\/scientistswithoutborders.nyas.org\/default.aspx\">database<\/a> aimed at fostering <em>partnerships among scientists in the developed and developing world and to coordinate science-based activities to help solve some of the big challenges that the developing world faces<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/content\/article\/fulltext?uid=PIIS0092867408005655\">Cell<\/a> ).<\/p>\n<p>\nDoctors, engineers and scientists, all emancipated.  <\/p>\n<p>\nSWB is actually (or plans to be) a database of resources and requirements, with the aim that those who need can find those who have (and are willing to share) to improve the quality of life in the developing world.  It looks bloody interesting, actually, and already has a number of global <a href=\"http:\/\/scientistswithoutborders.nyas.org\/Partners.aspx\">partners<\/a> , including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascb.org\/\">ASCB<\/a> .  <\/p>\n<p>\nAs a sampler, here is what people are asking for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Formal education services for staff on medical donation use<\/li>\n<li>Equipment needed to fix broken medical equipment<\/li>\n<li>Teachers<\/li>\n<li>Soils<\/li>\n<li>Water<\/li>\n<li>Disposal system for donation waste<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle to distribute medical products<\/li>\n<li>Practical training<\/li>\n<li>Computers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Counsellors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nand these are some resources being offered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching<\/li>\n<li>Clinical staff<\/li>\n<li>Medical equipment and pharmaceuticals<\/li>\n<li>Program manager<\/li>\n<li>Medical equipment<\/li>\n<li>Chemical Analysis<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle to distribute medical products<\/li>\n<li>Computers<\/li>\n<li>Administrators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Practical training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nI&#8217;m not sure how much of that is &#8216;science&#8217; and how much is &#8216;technology&#8217;, but I am pleased to see that someone is trying to dump excess administration.  Hoorah.  (Um.
