{"id":156,"date":"2008-07-09T01:36:35","date_gmt":"2008-07-09T01:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/07\/09\/designer_labels_2\/"},"modified":"2008-07-09T01:36:35","modified_gmt":"2008-07-09T01:36:35","slug":"designer_labels_2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/07\/09\/designer_labels_2\/","title":{"rendered":"Designer Labels #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago I <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/blogs\/user\/rpg\/2008\/05\/09\/designer-labels\">railed<\/a> against the inappropriate use of language.  <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/profile\/UE19877E8\">Certain<\/a> people pooh-poohed my concern.  <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/profile\/ennis\">Others<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/profile\/U0F8C0158\">agreed<\/a> with me, but I retreated into my cave to lick my wounds.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut it appears that I&#8217;m in good company.  Richard Sever, Executive Editor at <a href=\"http:\/\/jcs.biologists.org\/\">JCS<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v454\/n7200\/full\/454027c.html\">agrees<\/a> with me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIt would be easy to dismiss criticism of this as mere pedantry, if it weren&#8217;t for puzzled researchers voicing concern at the seemingly illogical or counterintuitive &#8216;design&#8217; of a biological structure or process. . . Systems that emerge by selection differ fundamentally from those conceived by design.
