{"id":158,"date":"2008-07-11T04:16:12","date_gmt":"2008-07-11T04:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/07\/11\/on_pointlessness\/"},"modified":"2008-07-11T04:16:12","modified_gmt":"2008-07-11T04:16:12","slug":"on_pointlessness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2008\/07\/11\/on_pointlessness\/","title":{"rendered":"On pointlessness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know, when I first came across it, I thought the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jove.com\/\">Journal of Visualized Experiments<\/a> was a great idea \u2014 even if I didn&#8217;t have time to watch any of it.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut then they start doing things like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jove.com\/index\/Details.stp?ID=755\">passaging<\/a> mammalian cells, and I&#8217;m a little <em>concerned<\/em> that there&#8217;s an amount of straw-clutching going on.  As a sometime elite (he says, modestly) cell biologist myself (I can get HEK293s into fresh flasks before Robert Plant finishes wailing &#8220;&#8230;aaand she&#8217;s buy-y-y-ing a stai-airway to hea-ea-eaven&#8221;) I know, see, that any institute or lab that has the necessary facilities for doing cell culture sure as damn is going to have a wizard who will watch over your shoulder and say &#8220;Don&#8217;t you bloody <em>dare<\/em> touch the neck of that bottle&#8221;.  The idea of watching a video to learn how to split cells, or even as a <em>reminder<\/em>, is simply<\/p>\n<p>\nWrong.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nPS.  While checking the spelling of &#8220;Plant&#8221; I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertplant.com\/index.php?l1=2&#038;l2=0&#038;l3=0&#038;articleID=110\">this<\/a> rather splendid-sounding concert, which unfortunately I&#8217;ve missed.  Robert Plant <em>and<\/em> Alison Krauss?
