{"id":318,"date":"2009-11-24T21:57:10","date_gmt":"2009-11-24T21:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2009\/11\/24\/on_styles_of_leadership\/"},"modified":"2009-11-24T21:57:10","modified_gmt":"2009-11-24T21:57:10","slug":"on_styles_of_leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/rpg\/2009\/11\/24\/on_styles_of_leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"On styles of leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/U4FCE78BD\/blog\/2009\/11\/24\/hello-mentor-are-you-there-its-me-lauren\">posts<\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/U2929A0EA\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/a-great-loss\">mentors<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/etchevers\/blog\/2009\/09\/25\/choosing-your-problems-and-your-battles\">mentorship<\/a>, I got thinking about my own experience of being on the receiving end of leadership. I should think that most of us who have had the fortune to work in academentia are familiar with Alexander Dent&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dentcartoons.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/nine-types-series.html\">&#8216;Nine types&#8217; series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nNine different leadership styles is probably pushing it a bit, to be honest. According to Forbes publisher Rich Karlgaard there are four different <em>successful<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/forbes\/2009\/1102\/opinions-rich-karlgaard-digital-rules.html\">types<\/a> (H\/T <a href=\"http:\/\/holykaw.alltop.com\/the-four-styles-of-leadership\">Noelle Chun<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visionary<\/li>\n<li>Empathetic<\/li>\n<li>Humble servitude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Moral\/ethical<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nSteve Jobs is probably the most obvious example of a &#8216;visionary&#8217; leader. This is the chap who took a somewhat cultish computing platform and turned it into a&#8211;well, a cultish computing platform that was not just suddenly incredibly sexy but also <em>successful<\/em>. Karlgaard gives a submarine captain as an example of an empathetic leader, as well as the cofounder of Hewlett-Packard. In the military, the function of the team is paramount, so it makes sense that you understand your charges. The heir to Wal-Mart, S. Robson Walton, is apparently a humble servant (in contrast to his father), and Starbucks is held up as an ethically-led company. <\/p>\n<p>\nAll very interesting, and in stark contrast to my own list of scientific leadership styles (some, none, or all of which I have experienced):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Micromanaging control freak<\/li>\n<li>Psychotic bitch queen from hell<\/li>\n<li>Incredibly bright but otherworldly professor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Waste of oxygen who mucks around on internet all day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nCan you think of any of your own mentors or PIs who have displayed any or all of these traits?
