The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gBxZVF3s4cU\">video<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2013\/nov\/04\/royal-institution-friday-evening-discourse\">my Friday Evening Discourse<\/a> at the Royal Institution last year caught the attention of a former colleague and produced an invitation to contribute a lecture to her plans to celebrate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iycr2014.org\">International Year of Crystallography<\/a> at the University of Western Australia in Perth this summer.<\/p>\n<p>And then, because my wife has family in Brisbane whom we have never visited, the organisers of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iupab2014.org\">International Biophysics Congress<\/a>, which will be held there this August, were good enough to offer a slot for a public lecture in their opening program.<\/p>\n<p>And then, to help justify the expense of the trip, which is being part funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/scanz.iucr.org\">Society of Crystallographers of Australia and New Zealand<\/a>, stopovers in Sydney and Melbourne were added. (<strong>Update, 23\/07\/14<\/strong>: after this was originally posted, I got a further invitation to talk at Hobart, which has now been included in\u00a0the itinerary). All in all it is going to be quite a month for me and my family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"View 'Australia Map' on Flickr.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sc63\/14618394955\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3853\/14618394955_eb4691456a.jpg\" alt=\"Australia Map\" width=\"500\" height=\"394\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">four<\/span> five talks are all free and open to the public, so if you find yourself in the area next month, please do come along.
