He is<br \/>\nquoted as saying that &#8220;a magazine with true gossip would open up the possibility<br \/>\nof real criticism in an overly polite and restrained scientific environment. &#8230;<br \/>\nscience is not best when it is polite&#8221;.&nbsp;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not sure I quite understand what he is proposing &#8211; gossip about<br \/>\nscientists&#8217; lives, or their work? or about policy-makers? Or does he just mean a<br \/>\nless formal environment where scientific topics can be discussed?&nbsp; Has he ever<br \/>\nheard of <b>blogs<\/b>, I wonder?<br \/>\nI&#8217;d have thought that blogs&nbsp;plus magazines like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/toc\/2010\/09\/\"><em>The Scientist<\/em> <\/a>and<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchresearch.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=16&amp;Itemid=16\"><em>Research<br \/>\nFortnight<\/em> <\/a>filled this niche quite well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish Times reports that James Watson would like to start a gossip magazine for scientists.
