Scientific poetry competitions are catching on.  First there was a genomics
\npoetry competition<\/a>, organised by the Genomics Forum and the Scottish Poetry
\nLibrary.  You’ve missed the deadline for entries; winners are due to be
\nannounced in November. More recently the California Institute of Regenerative
\nMedicine organised a stem cell poetry competition in celebration of Stem Cell
\nAwareness Day.  They got into some hot water with one of the winning entries and
\nhave withdrawn it as it offended some religious sensitivities.  The Scientist’s
\nblog Naturally Selected<\/em> has no such qualms and has republished
\nthe poem<\/a> in question. Commenters there praised the poem. 
\nMeanwhile, book competitions are hotting up. The shortlist
\nfor the Royal Society prize for science books<\/a>  was published back in August
\nand the competition comes to a head on 21 Oct. The Daily
\nTelegraph <\/a>published a guide to the shortlisted titles, tipping Nick Lane’s
\nbook on evolution: Life ascending<\/em>.  Nature have reviewed
\nall six books <\/a>on the shortlist, as have the Guardian<\/a>.
\nThe
\nIndependent<\/a> <\/em>gives a vote for Nick Lane too, suggesting his book will
\ntie with Marcus Chown’s book We need to talk about Kelvin<\/em>. It also
\nreports that funding for the prize is in doubt and this may be the last year
\nthat it is organised.
\nLast week the Wellcome
\nTrust published their shortlist<\/a> for works of fiction and non-fiction on the
\ntheme of health, illness or medicine. This is the second year of the
\ncompetition. It would be nice if they could somehow combine with the Royal
\nSociety prize.
\nAcross the pond, the National Academies awarded<\/a>
\none of their communication prizes to Richard Holmes for his book “The Age of
\nWonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of
\nScience.  <\/em>This must be good as it also won the Royal Society prize last
\nyear, but personally I found the book a bit like its title – very interesting
\nbut rather wordy and too long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
