More recently the California Institute of Regenerative<br \/>\nMedicine organised a stem cell poetry competition in celebration of Stem Cell<br \/>\nAwareness Day.&nbsp; They got into some hot water with one of the winning entries and<br \/>\nhave withdrawn it as it offended some religious sensitivities.&nbsp; The Scientist&#8217;s<br \/>\nblog <em>Naturally Selected<\/em> has no such qualms and has <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.the-scientist.com\/2010\/10\/13\/a-different-kind-of-controversy\/\">republished<br \/>\nthe poem<\/a> in question. Commenters there praised the poem.&nbsp;<br \/>\nMeanwhile, book competitions are hotting up. The <a href=\"http:\/\/royalsociety.org\/Royal-Society-Prize-for-Science-Books-2010-shortlist-announced\/\">shortlist<br \/>\nfor the Royal Society prize for science books<\/a>&nbsp; was published back in August<br \/>\nand the competition comes to a head on 21 Oct. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/8072485\/Royal-Society-science-book-prize-theyre-binding-us-with-science.html\">Daily<br \/>\nTelegraph <\/a>published a guide to the shortlisted titles, tipping Nick Lane&#8217;s<br \/>\nbook on evolution: <em>Life ascending<\/em>.&nbsp; Nature have <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/news\/thegreatbeyond\/2010\/10\/ruths_reviews_gods_philosopher_1.html\">reviewed<br \/>\nall six books <\/a>on the shortlist, as have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/science\/royal-society-science-book-prize\">Guardian<\/a>.<br \/>\n<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/endangered-the-science-book-prize-2111355.html\">The<br \/>\nIndependent<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>gives a vote for Nick Lane too, suggesting&nbsp;his book&nbsp;will<br \/>\ntie with Marcus Chown&#8217;s book <em>We need to talk about Kelvin<\/em>. It also<br \/>\nreports that funding for the prize is in doubt and this may be the last year<br \/>\nthat it is organised.<br \/>\nLast week the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellcome.ac.uk\/News\/Media-office\/Press-releases\/2010\/WTX063026.htm\">Wellcome<br \/>\nTrust published their shortlist<\/a>&nbsp;for works of fiction and non-fiction on the<br \/>\ntheme of health, illness or medicine. This is the second year of the<br \/>\ncompetition. It would be nice if they could somehow combine with the Royal<br \/>\nSociety prize.<br \/>\nAcross the pond, the National Academies <a href=\"http:\/\/www8.nationalacademies.org\/onpinews\/newsitem.aspx?RecordID=10142010\">awarded<\/a><br \/>\none of their communication prizes to Richard Holmes for his book &#8220;<em>The Age of<br \/>\nWonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of<br \/>\nScience.&nbsp; <\/em>This must be good as it also won the Royal Society prize last<br \/>\nyear, but personally I found the book a bit like its title &#8211; very interesting<br \/>\nbut rather wordy and too long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientific poetry competitions are catching on.&nbsp; First there was a genomics poetry competition, organised by the Genomics Forum and the Scottish Poetry Library.&nbsp; You&#8217;ve missed the deadline for entries; winners are due to be announced in November.
