I&#8217;m gonna keep doing this until people stop calling it St Patty&#8217;s Day)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966\">It&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paddy. <\/strong>The diminutive form of the name Patrick (or\u00a0P\u00e1draig\u00a0in the original Irish form)\u00a0is Paddy. Therefore it&#8217;s Saint\u00a0<em>Paddy&#8217;s<\/em> day. Patty is a girl&#8217;s name, the diminutive form of Patricia (think Peppermint Patty), and S<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.org\/saints\/saint.php?saint_id=202\"><span style=\"color: #339966\">aint Patricia&#8217;s day is August 25th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #339966\">, which happens to be my wedding anniversary.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">Kiss<\/span> trust me, I&#8217;m (half) Irish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966\">I do appreciate that the softening of the T sound in North American accents makes it difficult to distinguish from a D. I mean, even I ask for &#8220;warder&#8221; in restaurants now, as no-one ever understands me when I say &#8220;water&#8221; with a hard T. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966\">But now you know, and you have no more excuses!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966\">Anyway, I realise I&#8217;m fighting a losing battle here, so I guess you can call it whatever you like, as long as you call it a good reason to have a pint or ten!
