{"id":1213,"date":"2011-06-30T21:42:51","date_gmt":"2011-06-30T21:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/?p=1213"},"modified":"2011-06-30T21:42:51","modified_gmt":"2011-06-30T21:42:51","slug":"geeky-grossness-gauntlet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2011\/06\/30\/geeky-grossness-gauntlet\/","title":{"rendered":"Geeky Grossness Gauntlet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long-time readers may remember my friend Kyrsten&#8217;s famous <a href=\"http:\/\/vwxynot.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/guest-post-not-for-squeamish.html\">guest post about Bob the bot fly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vwxynot.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/guest-post-not-for-squeamish.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/R-7R2whXOCI\/AAAAAAAAAKM\/LjfgtwG0v2Q\/s1600\/bob2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob in March 2008.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Commenters&#8217; reactions on the original post ranged from mild (&#8220;kinda icky&#8221;) to ambivalent (&#8220;horrible. but very cool&#8221; \/ &#8220;utterly revolting, but sort of fascinating&#8221; \/ &#8220;this is both disgusting and cool&#8221;) to <del>extreme<\/del> normal (&#8220;disgusting and disturbing&#8221; \/ &#8220;seriously? ewwwww&#8230;.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Jeanne Sather, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/assertivecancerpatient.com\/\">The Assertive Cancer Patient<\/a> blog, found the post just this week, and commented as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And I just about pass out when I have to remove a tick, either from my  dog or from my own ankle after hiking! You geeks are made of strong  stuff.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, she then went back to her own blog and wrote a post called <a href=\"http:\/\/assertivecancerpatient.com\/2011\/06\/a-challenge-who-can-gross-me-out.html\">&#8220;A Challenge&#8211;Who Can Gross Me Out?&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My interpretation of that post was that a bunch of smart and funny  geeks were having a great time commenting on a truly disgusting parasite  one of their number picked up on a trip to Belize.<\/p>\n<p>The parasite has a name, Bob the Botfly, and there are photos as well.<\/p>\n<p>With all due respect to the scientists\/geeks, I think we cancer patients can top this.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s get started.
