But a recent survey found double the expected number of the animals (around 100, which isn&#8217;t great, but is better than 50). It also seems that the gibbons&#8217; range is expanding, which is critically important to their survival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/R6x1VirN65I\/AAAAAAAAAIE\/_EgSwW-M4AE\/s1600-h\/gibbon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/R6x1VirN65I\/AAAAAAAAAIE\/_EgSwW-M4AE\/s200\/gibbon.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><span>King (and Queen) of the swingers<br \/><\/span><br \/>The conservation efforts have been spearheaded by Fauna and Flora International, who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When we realised the gibbon was rare enough to demand urgent action, we immediately began protection measures, even though we lacked the results from an exhaustive census. We didn&#8217;t want the Cao Vit gibbon to go the way of the Yangtze river dolphin, which was declared extinct last year.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nice work!<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/earth\/main.jhtml?xml=\/earth\/2008\/02\/01\/eaape101.xml\">Story and photo from the Torygraph<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Also this week, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2008\/02\/080204-new-monkey.html\">National Geographic reports<\/a> that a 5 year search finally paid off with the discovery of a new species of monkey in the Amazon. The species, known as the Ayres uakari, is already vulnerable. The discoverer, Jean-Phillipe Boubli from the University of Auckland, says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to have to create a park or reserve, because [its habitat is] not a protected area.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/R6x3LCrN66I\/AAAAAAAAAIM\/VJofRyIAzP8\/s1600-h\/080204-new-monkey_big.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/R6x3LCrN66I\/AAAAAAAAAIM\/VJofRyIAzP8\/s200\/080204-new-monkey_big.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><span>King of Hide and Seek<\/p>\n<p><\/span>Let&#8217;s hope it works out as well as it did for the gibbons.<\/p>\n<p>p.s.
