{"id":1390,"date":"2011-09-19T22:26:02","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T22:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/?p=1390"},"modified":"2011-09-19T23:06:08","modified_gmt":"2011-09-19T23:06:08","slug":"sop-sadly-opaque-protocol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2011\/09\/19\/sop-sadly-opaque-protocol\/","title":{"rendered":"SOP: Sadly Opaque Protocol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heard in a recent(ish) meeting to define a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nprot\/journal\/v2\/n2\/full\/nprot.2007.25.html\">tumour xenografting<\/a> SOP to be used by three different labs:<\/p>\n<p>PI 1 (Xenografting Expert): &#8220;The first thing you need to do when you get a new tumour is to determine if it&#8217;s actually a human tumour, or just a spontaneous mouse tumour&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 2 (Aspiring Xenografting Expert): &#8220;How?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 1: &#8220;Oh, you just look down the microscope&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 2: &#8220;What stain do you use?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 1: &#8220;No stain, you just look at it&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 2: &#8220;But how can you tell if it&#8217;s a mouse tumour?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 1: &#8220;Because it <em>looks<\/em> like a mouse tumour&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p><strong>Later:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PI 2: &#8220;Do you wait until you can detect a palpable mass, or do you re-graft after a set number of months?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 1: &#8220;Palpable mass. Unless the mice are ready before that&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 2: &#8220;How can you tell if they&#8217;re ready?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PI 1 (with a grin): &#8220;Well, they just <em>look<\/em> ready.
