{"id":1743,"date":"2009-08-04T19:34:04","date_gmt":"2009-08-04T19:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2009\/08\/04\/its_oh_so_quiet\/"},"modified":"2009-08-04T19:34:04","modified_gmt":"2009-08-04T19:34:04","slug":"its_oh_so_quiet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2009\/08\/04\/its_oh_so_quiet\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s oh so quiet"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"shhh, shhh\">\n<li>it&#8217;s oh so still*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/people\/ennis\/blog\/2009\/07\/28\/spooky\">The boss is away<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe admin manager is away.<br \/>\nThe lab manager is away.<br \/>\nAre the <del>lab rats<\/del> mice playing?<br \/>\nWell, they may or may not be going for more (iced) coffee breaks than usual.<br \/>\nBUT the resident grant wrangler is taking advantage of the peace and quiet, and is working away on those little projects that get forgotten amid the din and clatter of the grant deadline months. Progress report templates, transcriptions of the barely legible notes from a course taken in the Spring, early submission of ethics certificate renewal applications, that kind of thing.<br \/>\n<strong>but soon again (shhh, shhh) starts another big riot<\/strong><br \/>\nThe boss and the department&#8217;s other PIs will return soon, and launch straight into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr.ca\/\">CIHR<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.ca\/research\/?sc_lang=en\">NCIC \/ Canadian Cancer Society<\/a> operating grant applications. These grants are the life blood, the bread and butter, of Canadian research labs in my field, and I  anticipate working on at least five or six big grants due between now and mid-October.<br \/>\nA three week vacation is planned for November, details TBD. I&#8217;m foregoing all remaining 2009 vacation time<sup><a href=\"#fn15331101164f04ccbd45983\">1<\/a><\/sup> to save up enough days for this trip; I also have nine days of paid sick leave left in case I need to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital and\/or rehab facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"footnote\"><sup>1<\/sup> I&#8217;ve already taken four days in February to go skiing, and another day in May to attend my citizenship ceremony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>it&#8217;s oh so still* The boss is away.
