{"id":205,"date":"2008-06-18T00:56:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-18T00:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2008\/06\/18\/put-on-a-happy-face\/"},"modified":"2008-06-18T00:56:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-18T00:56:00","slug":"put-on-a-happy-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2008\/06\/18\/put-on-a-happy-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Put on a happy face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently discovered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postgenomic.com\/faces\/index.php\">PubMed Faceoff<\/a> &#8211; an application that assigns something called <a href=\"http:\/\/kspark.kaist.ac.kr\/Human%20Engineering.files\/Chernoff\/Chernoff%20Faces.htm\">Chernoff Faces<\/a> to different publications. <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nature.com\/blogs\/user\/euan\/2008\/06\/09\/pubmed-faceoff\">Euan Adie <\/a>on the Nature Network provided the link, and a much better explanation than I&#8217;m capable of, so go and check out the original post if you&#8217;re interested in the details!<\/p>\n<p>Screw the details, all I wanted to do was play with this fun new toy, so I searched for my own papers. The programme assigns facial features to various aspects of the publication &#8211; for example, the age of the face corresponds to the age of the paper, and bigger smiles mean more citations compared to the expected number. The gender and race are usually assigned randomly, as in the examples below, although you can standardise them so that the other features stand out more.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my best paper (38 actual citations compared to 16 expected &#8211; it was in PNAS!)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SFhiUb-XMDI\/AAAAAAAAAPg\/YV592YCtcY0\/s400\/happy.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>And here&#8217;s my worst (only cited 6 times when 13 citations were expected)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"93\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SFhiVIbDIWI\/AAAAAAAAAPw\/N9JaZjAVXIM\/s400\/unhappy.jpg\" width=\"64\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hey, that last one reminds me of something.
