Designated bike routes everywhere (I attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.momentumplanet.ca\/news\/vancouver-gets-ready-central-valley-greenway-grand-opening\">opening <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">celebrations<\/span> <\/a>for the newest one last weekend), and more considerate drivers than in Glasgow (although <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">everything&#8217;s<\/span> relative, and some of my fellow cyclists aren&#8217;t exactly helping, as <a href=\"http:\/\/2postdocswalkintoabar.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/open-letter-to-my-fellow-cyclists.html\">Dr. J has already commented<\/a>). The city has even gone to <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">extraordinary<\/span> lengths to keep my regular route open during the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">loooooooooooong<\/span> light rail tunnel and station <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">construction<\/span> project on <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Cambie<\/span> Street, as evidenced below:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SguIF7HOB2I\/AAAAAAAAA9w\/Kl08UH2SbVI\/s1600-h\/DSC01971.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SguIF7HOB2I\/AAAAAAAAA9w\/Kl08UH2SbVI\/s400\/DSC01971.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><em>The exact <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">configuration<\/span> of bollards, cones, signs and fences has seemed to change almost every week for two years, so you&#8217;re never exactly sure which way to go, but hey, it&#8217;s open! And you gotta admire their creativity in constantly finding novel ways around the new holes and other obstacles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>I actually stopped a few weeks ago to thank a member of the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">construction<\/span> team for keeping the route open, and she was so touched that someone had actually taken the time to do this that I wanted to make my <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">appreciation<\/span> public!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SguIFpSMX9I\/AAAAAAAAA9o\/fvpLc0PnfJQ\/s1600-h\/DSC01967.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/SguIFpSMX9I\/AAAAAAAAA9o\/fvpLc0PnfJQ\/s400\/DSC01967.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>But since we got our new <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">eco<\/span>-conscious mayor, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregor_Robertson_(politician)\">Gregor Robertson<\/a> (follow him on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/mayorgregor\">Twitter!<\/a>), things have gone from good to better: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.straight.com\/article-232359\/bikeshare-program-rides-vancouver-weekend\">A trial bike-share programme<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/british-columbia\/story\/2009\/06\/03\/bc-car-free-sundays-vancouver.html\">A doubled cycling <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">infrastructure<\/span> budget<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Car free days on many Sundays (same link as above)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/british-columbia\/story\/2009\/06\/23\/bc-burrard-bridge-bike-lane-plan.html\">Segregated bike lanes on the deathtrap that is the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Burrard<\/span> Bridge<\/a><\/li>\n<li>And, today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/british-columbia\/story\/2009\/07\/03\/bc-pedestrian-bike-bridge-false-creek.html\">a proposal for a new pedestrian and bike bridge<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The only thing better than the actual <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">improvements<\/span> is the spluttering red-faced reaction of the many local NIMBY and anti-cyclist types (see comments on any of the CBC articles linked above).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yay<\/span> Vancouver! <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yay<\/span> Gregor! And he even has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunghaggisfatchoy.com\/blog\/politicsandpoliticians\/_archives\/2008\/12\/9\/4014773.html\">kilt<\/a>, and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery.org\/a\/10951\">trying<\/a> to get us rapid rail links to Seattle and Portland, and has started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityfarmer.info\/ctv-news-mayor-of-vancouver-opens-city-hall-community-garden\/\">community gardens <\/a>at City Hall! <\/p>\n<p>I think I know who&#8217;s getting my vote in the next municipal election&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vancouver is a fantastic place to be a cyclist.
