{"id":641,"date":"2010-10-25T21:40:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-25T21:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2010\/10\/25\/derailed\/"},"modified":"2010-10-25T21:40:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-25T21:40:00","slug":"derailed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occamstypewriter.org\/vwxynot\/2010\/10\/25\/derailed\/","title":{"rendered":"Derailed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/vwxynot.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/my-definition-of-bombastic-project.html\">My biweekly, half-hour progress update meetings<\/a> have been running for about a year now, and are proving their usefulness yet again as I work towards Friday&#8217;s progress report deadline.<\/span><span>The cast is never the same for two performances in a row<\/span><span>; some people attend every time, others show their face every six months, and the rest of the team fill the entire spectrum in between. This has allowed me to notice a couple of correlations:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/TMX4QY_f4_I\/AAAAAAAACZs\/Lz6apFeIqI8\/s1600\/graph1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Xjsb8ObOj0k\/TMX4QY_f4_I\/AAAAAAAACZs\/Lz6apFeIqI8\/s400\/graph1.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>Yeah. Short, snappy updates do not mix well with the professorial tendency to focus on the ins and outs of one sub-sub-project for an hour at a time&#8230;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, the focusing is extremely useful &#8211; especially for the person running the actual experiments, but also for me, as evidenced by the reams of notes I take in these sessions.
