I am an author and an editor with the scientific journal Nature (see Disclaimer on the right). In addition to many broadcast appearances and innumerable articles in newspapers and magazines including The Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, El Pais and BBC Focus, I have written a few short stories and several books. The latest is The Accidental Species, a book on human evolution,  published by the University of Chicago Press.

My other books include: The Science of Middle-earth (now available as an e-book); Jacob’s LadderIn Search Of Deep TimeBy The Sea (a novel); Siege of Stars, Scourge of Stars and Rage of Stars (collectively the Sigil SF trilogy); Before The Backbone, and A Field Guide to Dinosaurs (with stellar dino-artist Luis V. Rey.) I edited the reprint collections Shaking the Tree and Rise of the Dragon, and the SF collection Futures From Nature. My short fiction has appeared at LabLit.com, and in the anthologies Year’s Best SF 6,  Fables from the Fountain and Looking Landwards.

I live in Cromer, Norfolk, England, with my family and numerous pets, and enjoy playing hard-rock organ with my band Stealer, beachcombing, supporting Norwich City FC, and falling asleep.

I am represented by Jill Grinberg Literary Management LLC, and that’s where all inquiries about sole-author book projects should be directed in the first instance.
