I’m the Professor of Materials Theory in the Materials Department at ETH Zurich. My research revolves around the class of materials known as multiferroics, which combine ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in the same phase. This combination allows us to do cool stuff ranging from designing new devices in which the magnetic properties are controlled using electric fields, to testing theories of high-energy physics and cosmology.
I’m passionate about science education, director of my department’s study program, and holder of the ETH Golden Owl Award for excellence in teaching. If you don’t find me trying to make a room-temperature superconductor, I am probably playing my clarinet, or skiing or climbing in the Alps.
