Libel Reform – where are we?

Regular readers of this blog will be probably be aware of the ongoing campaign to reform the libel laws of England and Wales. These laws have pernicious effects in many aspects of public life — including science and medicine. They place a dangerous constriction on the freedom of scientists and medics to engage in robust debate on matters of public interest. The cases of Simon Singh and Ben Goldacre — both of whom challenged dubious practices in healthcare — are well documented. True afficionados will also be aware of my minor but close brush with libel law a couple of years ago.

The reform campaign has been extremely successful to date. It attracted widespread support, leading all three major political parties to commit to reform in their election manifestos last year. In March the coalition government published its draft legislation and initiated a period of consultation which has just ended. Science bloggers affected by the libel laws wrote to the Parliamentary Committee that is considering the draft Defamation Bill to — in the best scientific tradition — provide evidence of the detrimental effects of the current law (you can read the PDF for yourself).

On Monday 13th June the committee met to hear oral submissions detailing the scientific and medical perspective on libel law, not just from Singh and Goldacre, but also from Fiona Godlee and Philip Campbell, editors-in-chief of the British Medical Journal and Nature respectively. You can watch the session yourself, starting at about 17:39 in this video (MS Silverlight plugin required). I recommend it — especially if you’re not familiar with the various shades of our libel law and their impacts on science — it’s a good way to get up to speed.

The committee will now consider the various submissions and prepare a report which will, we hope, influence the final form of the Defamation Bill that is due to be published in October.

In the meantime, the campaign must go on, in order to keep the issue in the public eye and in the minds of those working on the bill in the Ministry of Justice.

To do that requires the time and effort of many people — and of course some cash to allow the Libel Reform Campaign to keep banging away on this important issue. So there’s a new appeal (further details here).

If you can spare a few quid, there’s a very good chance that your money will help to make the UK a better place for scientists and doctors to debate freely the contentious aspects of their work with the people who matter — the public.

Here comes Impact

In UK scientific circles and the wider realm of academia impact has been around for a while now. Grant forms incorporate large blank spaces in which applicants are required to outline their plans for ensuring that the work they hope to do will have impact. In other words that it will make a difference, not just in economic terms (though that has often been seen as the major preoccupation), but also that it will contribute to our wider society, in terms of health or policy formulation or the understanding of science by our fellow citizens or any other way that you think may be worthy.

Impact is also going to feature in the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the mechanism by which the quality of the research done in UK universities will be assessed in future. This is very important because the REF score of your department will have a big impact — no pun intended (this is a serious business) — on the funds allocated to it by HEFCE for research support.

The London School of Economics (LSE) held a one-day conference last week to discuss how the REF would be seeking to assess the impact of our research and I was invited along to give a personal view on how science blogging might contribute to the scheme of things. And that’s not all. This impact question is an important one, but attending the conference highlighted for me, and for many others I suspect, the peculiar difficulties associated with figuring out what are the effects on the UK of all the publicly-funded work that we do. I wrote up my immediate impressions for the LSE Impact Blog. It all went a bit strange for a while — as you will see if you read my post — but, as an academic community, we do have to get our heads round this thing called impact. And if we don’t like it, it’s up to us to try and make changes. I’d urge all scientists to think about it.

Out of this World in the Library

Yesterday, in four brief photo-posts on my Posterous account I highlighted snapshots — literally — from the British Library’s current exhibition on science fiction. I’m more of a fan of the genre in movies than in books but I had heard good things about the Library’s display and wanted to take a look.

The exhibition is mostly books and manuscripts that exemplify the form — locked in glass cases in a fairly dim room — but I wasn’t disappointed. It is organised into themes — the moon, visions of the future, time-travel, alien forms, alien invasions and such-like — that provide an easy framework for perusing the various artefacts on display.

I tend not to be very intensive in my examination of museums or galleries. I prefer to mosey here and there and see what takes my fancy. In this exhibition there was plenty to catch the eye and stimulate reflection. I’ve already displayed a few of the items that struck me (start here and work forward).

But there were a few themes that also had some impact. Prominent among them are the limitations of the human imagination, exemplified in visions of the future, most of which have been shown to be too closely rooted in the time of their conception. This was particularly true prior to the 18th century since there was not a strong conception then of the transformative power of science and technology.

That said, the age of science fiction was also striking. The earliest example on display (if I remember correctly) was a tale of interplanetary travel and extraterrestrials from Lucien of Samosata, a greek author from the 2nd Century AD. But there were also works on display from the 13th and 14th Centuries.

I guess I had always regarded the form as a fairly light type of fiction. I’m not sure why. It might reflect my predilection for science fiction movies, many of which are inconsequential entertainment, though of course there are significant exceptions. But the exhibition has enlarged my idea of the genre. I see its seriousness more clearly, as an art form that allows imaginative exploration of what it means to be human.

So, with my interest re-ignited, I’d like to get back into science fiction literature. I will start with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (a free version of which has been idling on my Kindle app for a few months now). I also want to have another look at The Forbidden Planet, to examine for myself its Shakespearean fabric and I think I’ll give one of Alan Moore’s steampunk graphic novels a go.

Transport of Delight

I spent most of last weekend and all of yesterday finalising a chapter I had been asked to contribute to an upcoming monograph on human serum albumin. Monograph is a fancy word for book in academia. And academia is a fancy word for the people who work in universities and research institutes and consider themselves smart.

Yesterday I was polishing the text of my latest draft and assembling the figures. My group has been working with albumin for over fourteen years now and I am pretty familiar with it. The familiarity makes it difficult to come at the subject afresh but I like playing around with the graphics software to see if I can come up with a new angle. In doing so I made the figure below, which is a variant of one that I prepared for my book chapter.

Familiarity, it is well known, also breeds contempt or, at the very least, a certain laziness. With albumin it becomes easy to overlook the truly remarkable features of the molecule, but working at my figures yesterday was a salutary reminder of the fecundity of nature at the molecular level.

Albumin is a protein molecule made in your liver and then released into your bloodstream and the fluids surrounding the cells of your major organs. It is made in large amounts — you have about 200 grammes of the stuff — and does a tour of duty lasting about a month. In that time the molecule circulates in the body helping to transport a range of smaller molecules, some of which, like fatty acids, the body depends on for nutrition and growth; others are toxins like hemin and bilirubin, byproducts of cellular damage that need to be carted off to the liver for disposal.

The protein is extraordinary in the way that its structure has adapted to grab hold of such a variety of different compounds. I can’t think of another molecule like it. The picture above is an aggregate of many years of work, most of it done in my lab. The image is unrealistic in that is shows albumin binding to many of its different cargos at the same time — fatty acids in dark grey, bilirubin in pink, hemin in light grey (just behind the bilirubin) and four molecules of the hormone thyroxine in yellow. But it does give a good idea of the astounding transport capacity of the protein.

Albumin is a thing of wonder and, tough though it was to grind through the writing and re-writing of my chapter (not to mention the years of laboratory slog that went into the work), the beauty of the image reminds me what a delightful privilege it is to do science.

Biochemical Futures

The fourth edition of Voet & Voet’s Biochemistry, which is currently the recommended undergraduate text on our degree program at Imperial College, weighs three thousand and thirty-nine point two four grams. It has one thousand four hundred and eighty-two pages of text and pictures (page 945 is particularly good) divided into thirty-two chapters covering the whole of the core curriculum. The book is in every sense a weighty tome.

Because of the sheer weight of the thing, it has almost never left my office and that has greatly limited the book’s utility to me. Much as it might benefit me to take Voet & Voet’s expansive volume on my commute, I haven’t had the strength. How I have longed for an electronic edition that I could squeeze into one of my glossy mobile devices.

Now my wish has been granted since the publishers (Wiley) have produced a computer-friendly version of the book and kindly provided me with a free copy to road-test*. Ladies and gentlemen, I have arrived in the future.

As befits a modern electronic entity, it is easy to move between machines. I originally downloaded the book (546 MB but no grams) onto my laptop, having already installed the requisite but free Vital Source Bookshelf application (PC or Mac). The purchase also allows you to install versions on your iPad or iPhone, which are arguably better devices for reading.

What is more, you also gain access to an online version of the book, so that you can learn biochemistry even when bereft of the comfort of your regular electronic buddies.

So what is it like, this multi-dimensional reading experience? On the whole I have been very pleasantly surprised. And not just because my nerd bone was tickled by the technology.

The desktop version provides relatively easy access to the book – the table of contents is listed in a column on the left-hand side of the viewing window and is divided into chapters, sections and sub-sections, each of which is a hyperlink to the relevant part of the book.

As for all platforms, the book pagination is identical to the printed version, a sensible decision that will make life easier for lecturers and students, especially while the paper and eBook versions are both in use. The electronic versions therefore also have the same index as the printed book but, somewhat frustratingly, the index entries do not act as hyperlinks. Instead you have to type the page number of the desired entry into a textbox before you can jump to that section. An alternative way to find your way around is to use the fairly responsive search function, though I have yet to discover if it understands Boolean logic.

Helpfully the desktop version also allows you to highlight sections of text and to add notes — a vital function for all students of biochemistry, young and, like this one, old. Cleverly, these are automatically synchronised across all versions of the book. You can also add highlights and annotations using the web-based edition of Biochemistry, but unfortunately this is not possible on either the iPad or iPhone versions. For me this is a serious limitation since these portable platforms are likely to be my primary reading devices. I do hope this deficit will be addressed in future verisons.

The legibility of the text and images is very good on the desktop version — the pages have the appearance of a high quality PDF (though I am unsure of the precise format). By contrast, the web edition has suffered significant degradation, presumably due the compression applied to reduce the file size. The text is readable on my 13″ laptop screen, but if your eyes struggle with the small font size in the default display, any magnification reveals the pixellation the compressed image. Nonetheless, I imagine this outlet will only receive sporadic use from most readers and it is certainly handy to have network access to the book.

Happily, although the versions for the iPad and iPhone also betray traces of file compression, the loss in quality is much less noticeable. On the iPad, while the text does not quite have the sharpness of a PDF (as one would see with Papers, for example), it is comfortably readable. The screen resolution on the iPad is just about good enough for the display a whole page to be legible, though the text size is close to the limit of my tolerance. I suspect that the screen resolution of the next generation iPad will fully resolve that issue. In the meantime I will pinch and zoom my way through the text and figures — it’s the modern way.

The reading experience on the smaller iPhone is surprisingly good. That is to say it is surprisingly good so long as you are zoomed in to a single column view, which is no great hardship — just double-tap on the page — and reading from the screen of an iPhone 4. I suspect the lower resolution screen on earlier models would be insufficient.

The iPad and iPhone versions have lost something of the navigational capabilities of the desktop version since the table of contents is only broken into chapters — sections and sub-sections are not listed. This is an odd and frustrating omission by Wiley since inclusion of these additional stopping points would seem to be a trivial task.

Niggles aside, the primary boon of these electronic versions of this updated classic is that they are truly portable. The weight of the text has been reduced by a very impressive 100% without sacrificing any of the scientific meat. My commute is going to be more biochemical, much to the benefit of my students. And it amuses me no end that I am now living in the future.

The Best Seminar?

What is the best seminar that you have ever attended? And what made it so good?

I pondered this question after my name appeared on the list of speakers for our internal divisional seminar series this term. I thought that, rather than give another run-of-the-mill progress report, I might have a little fun with the format. And perhaps make a useful point at the same time.

So I gave my talk the title “Mind-blowing work of staggering genius: Probably the best seminar you will ever attend.” It seemed to provoke a deal of interest — a sizeable audience trooped into the lecture theatre at the appointed hour — though, as you will see, one of my colleagues was none too impressed.

The Speed of X-rays

I was back at the Diamond Light Source today — the synchrotron that we use to blast protein crystals with X-rays to figure out the structures of protein molecules. The beamlines at the synchrotron where we do our experiments have some very fancy kit and, in explaining the apparatus to one of my students, I was reminded of how much things have changed in the past twenty years.

You should have seen the look on her face

The last king of England to lead an army on the battlefield was George II, at the Battle of Dettingen in Bavaria in 1743 during the War of the Austrian Succession.

The last President of the United States to serve in wartime was George Bush Sr., a Naval pilot during World War II. He flew many missions and was in fact awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross “for heroism and extraordinary achievement… in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Bonin Islands, on September 2, 1944”.

Bush was not directly involved in combat while he was President, although he was Commander-in-Chief during the Gulf War in 1990 that removed Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The modernisation of warfare has tended to distance national leaders from the battlefield. But communications technology has now taken us full circle. I wonder what impact it will have on the exercise of power?

On Sunday night, 1st  May 2011, President Barack Obama and his closest advisers sat and watched as video cameras mounted on the helmets of the US Navy SEALs relayed a live feed of their attack on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Obama had ordered the attack with the express intention, it turns out, of killing Bin Laden. We are given to understand that he and his team witnessed the killing, one shot to the head and one to the chest.

The photograph released by the White House shows the President sitting grim-faced, his eyes fixed on the video screens. My guess is it will become one of the most iconic photographs of the year.

What stuck me most about the picture was not the President’s sombre posture but the look on Hilary Clinton’s face — the hand clasped over her mouth, the eyes wide. She can’t quite take in what she is seeing.

Is it an expression of horror? Or of moral doubt? Possibly. It reminded me (and many others I’m sure) of an uncannily similar scene in the film Patriot Games in which Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst played by Harrison Ford, watches with misgiving as US commandos attack and kill terrorists in North Africa on the basis of evidence that he has unearthed but is not completely sure is correct.

I am not about to rehearse the arguments for or against the legality or justice of Sunday’s killing, since I don’t have the training and it has already been done elsewhere (for example by Geoffrey Robertson and David Allen Green). No-one seriously doubts that Bin Laden was involved in the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. But what has been the cost of America’s abandonment of the highest standards of justice? Its adherence to truth and justice were diminished with each water-boarded inmate at Camp X-ray.

Arguably the situations are not the same but the resonance with Patriot Games reminded me of the shoot-to-kill policy alleged to have been deployed by the police in Northern Ireland against IRA terrorists in the early 1980s. True or not, suspicion aroused by the clumsy handling of the investigation of police shootings of IRA men and the subsequent Stalker Inquiry eroded the moral authority of the state. In the case of the killing of Bin Laden there has been no evasion by the US authorities. It has been justified as an act of war. But the execution still leaves me uncomfortable.

And from her face, it seems that Secretary Clinton may also have been unsettled. In public statements of course she has justified the decision of the administration. But her ‘presence’ — by video link — in the bedroom where the leader of Al-Qaida was shot in the head and chest may have created a moment where the real, human consequences of enormous political decisions are played out and become visible.

Does that re-scaling of the experience give us a stronger sense of reality? We should not forget the victims killed as the Twin Towers collapsed — nearly 3000 of them. The sheer number is at once horrifying and deadening. Who can imagine that many people dying at the same time? The numbers numb the imagination in those who were not there, or have no connection with the victims. We saw the buildings falling but somehow it was not as awful as witnessing individuals jump from their offices to escape the fire.

The weight of numbers flattens our imagination, our empathy — a variable human capacity that has been discussed recently by Simon Baron Cohen and Jeremy Rivkin and may be the key to breaking out of the cycle of violence.

Perhaps it should be obligatory for political leaders to watch their armed forces in action.

Artful History

“There have been times in the history of man when the earth seems suddenly to have grown warmer… I don’t put that forward as a scientific proposition, but the fact remains that three or four times in history man has made a leap forward that would have been unthinkable under ordinary evolutionary conditions.”

With these words at the opening of the second episode of his masterly television series, Civilisation, Kenneth Clark introduces an engrossing account of the unexpected flowering of creativity in 12th Century Europe.

The start of another artful hour

The same might also be said, albeit at some risk of over-statement, of the genesis of Civilisation and the documentary series that came after it — gems such as Jacob Bronowski’s Ascent of Man or Alistair Cooke’s America. There was a movement, an impulse in television documentary in the late 1960s and early 1970s that seems to have set a new standard of excellence. In this case, however, the reasons for the new impulse are reasonably clear: the creation of BBC2 with a remit to contribute to educational programming in the UK and the arrival of David Attenborough as controller of the new channel, a man determined to find subjects that would showcase the capabilities of the new technology of high-resolution colour television — BBC2 was the first European TV channel to broadcast regularly in colour.

Attenborough’s conception was to build a program around the most beautiful pictures and buildings produced in Western Europe, accompanied by the music of the time and narrated by a prominent art historian. To cut a long story barbarically short he lighted upon Kenneth Clark as the ideal presenter and a few short years later, in 1969, Civilisation: A Personal View — to give the series its full title (1) — was broadcast. I have just watched the entire series for the first time on DVD (2) and it is quite wonderful.

I didn’t think it would be at the start because the construction is, perhaps of necessity, rather laboured. The style of the programs is more sedate than the rapid fire of modern programming and Clark takes a couple of hours to get into his stride. But when he does so, the effect is riveting.

The concept of the series — taken from Ruskin — is that great nations may only truly be known by reading the book of their art. Clark takes as his starting point the collapse of the Roman empire, overrun by the barbarians, and the descent into a cultural darkness that shrouded Europe for hundreds of years. From there, in thirteen hour-long episodes he traces the re-emergence of Western civilisation from the 10th century onwards, approximately a century at a time.

His story is woven, as Attenborough intended, around the artefacts of this emergent civilisation— the buildings, sculpture, ornamentation, tapestries, paintings, music, opera, poems and plays that sprang forth from the human mind as it struggled to comprehend the world and the meaning and vicissitudes of existence.

Clark is a formidable but amiable host. He was a highly respected art historian before making a late career in television. The immediate impression he gives is rather patrician — well-cut suits and tweed jackets, polished accent, bald pate accentuating a high brow above strangely narrowed eyes, just a pair of dark slots. But listen to that refined voice for just a few minutes and you realise you are in the company of a superb and benevolent intellect. His wit and perception surprised me time and again, lifting insight from this cathedral facade or teasing intention from the pose of that statue. This was a subtle and supple mind, one that reached into places I didn’t even know existed.

Clark’s pieces to camera are complemented by lengthy visual segments accompanied only by music. These may be too slow for some. At times Civilisation contrives to make Sagan’s thoughtful meander through the Cosmos look indecorously rushed. The camera pans slowly through the interior of a church, or drifts admiringly over the contours of a sculpture, or closes gradually on a detail from a painting as choirs sing or orchestras play. But the pace has been well measured for its purpose: appreciation.

Even so, the richness of the narrative is staggering. I found I had to watch each episode twice to absorb the better part of the detail. I was consoled to learn that the programs were originally broadcast twice a week, in part to justify the extreme expense of the production but also because Attenborough rightly perceived that people would be hungry to see it again.

Despite the repetition, I have been overwhelmed and hesitated to even start this blog post. I don’t know how to do justice to Clark’s artful story. It is hard for me to navigate by the key points or the most telling insights because there were simply too many of them. The best I can do — and it is poor fare since I cannot hope to convey the visual wealth of the program — is to pick out a few fragments of Clark’s arresting erudition and wit.

Sometimes it even spills over into wittiness. Here he is in the very first episode quoting a Celtic account of the Viking invasions of Ireland:

“‘If there were a hundred tongues in each head’, said a contemporary Irish writer, ‘they could not recount or narrate or enumerate or tell what all the Irish suffered of hardships or of injuring and of oppression in every household from those valiant, wrathful, purely pagan people.’

Then he looks into the camera and says, “The Celts haven’t changed much.” The cheeky sod, I thought, until I realised that Clark’s wife was Irish, so perhaps it was a whimsical marital jibe.

More often he is serious. Contemplating 10th Century crucifixes, Clark perceptively observes:

“We have grown so used to the idea that the Crucifixion is the supreme symbol of Christianity, that it is a shock to realise how late in the history of Christian art its power was recognised… The simple fact is that the early Church needed converts, and from this point of view the Crucifixion was not an encouraging subject.”

Speaking of the elaborate Cluniac style of ecclesiastical art that appeared in southern France in the 12th Century Clark suspects that this eruption was due to an “irrepressible, irresponsible energy”, and notes memorably that “the Romanesque carvers were like a school of dolphins.”

Such inventive imagery is typical of the man but Clark often also reveals a sensitive touch. He recalls the pilgrimages, which were partly motivated by the desire to gather relics to be displayed to the faithful in ornate enclosures — the bones of saints, fragments from the cross, milk of the virgin’s breast. While we might easily scoff at such artefacts today, Clark is more understanding and extends a placating hand: “that is the medieval mind. They cared passionately about the truth but their sense of evidence was different from ours.”

That eloquent and compassionate understanding is a common thread but it is by no means always sympathetic to the Church. Talking in a later episode of the Catholic restoration that followed the Reformation and erected the colossus of St Peter’s in Rome as a re-assertion of authority, Clark says:

“The sense of grandeur is no doubt a human instinct but, carried too far, it becomes inhuman. I wonder if a single thought that had helped forward the human spirit has ever been conceived or written down in an enormous room; except, perhaps, in the reading room of the British Library.”

That tail-end remark is a sly allusion to Karl Marx, who crops up in the final program on the inhumanity of industrialisation that in turn stirred the first movements of humanitarianism. The comment foreshadows the supplanting of religious by more critical or inquisitive impulses to guide artistic creation as the centuries passed. It was in early 17th Century Holland where these ideas started to take root. Clark observes:

“When one begins to ask the question ‘does it work?’ or even ‘does it pay’ instead of ‘is it God’s will?’ one gets a new set of answers and one of the first of them is this: that to try to suppress opinions which one doesn’t share is much less profitable than to tolerate them.”

What a beautifully succinct introduction to the emergence of the Enlightenment. It brings Clark momentarily into the realm of science. His touch here is sure though somewhat limited — Clark seems more impressed by engineering than science — and he really only mentions Newton en route to introducing Christopher Wren, mathematician and astronomer turned architect. Along the way he is candid about the extent of his knowledge:

“I can’t pretend that I have read the Principia, and if I did I wouldn’t understand it any more than Samuel Pepys did when, as President of the Royal Society, it was handed to him for approval.”

Catching up with Wren, who built the Naval Hospital at Greenwich on a scale that seems unimaginable today, Clark — standing in that grand building — marks an interim summary:

“What is civilisation? A state of mind where it is thought desirable for a naval hospital to look like this and for the inmates to dine in a splendidly decorated hall. In fact the Painted Hall in Greenwich hospital is one of the finest rooms in England.”

But this story does not have a happy ending. Not yet at any rate:

“Every civilisation seems to have its nemesis, not only because the first bright impulses become tarnished by greed and laziness, but because of unpredictables — in this case… the growth of the population. The greedy became greedier, the ignorant lost touch with traditional skills, and the light of experience narrowed its beam so that a grand design like Greenwich would now be thought of as a waste of money that no accountant could condone.”

Following this trajectory, the final episode opens on the Manhattan skyline, which Clark notes wistfully was built in about the same time as it took to construct a single medieval cathedral, not of course as a monument to God but “to the glory of mammon.” It is not that Clark is advocating a religious world view — far from it — but he is decidedly for the humanising power of art, through its capacity to overcome materialistic ambitions by enlarging our self-knowledge.

Having watched the whole series of Civilisation I certainly feel enlarged, even if I’m not entirely sure how (3). The effect is difficult to capture, as this patchwork post makes clear; re-reading it now I see I have conveyed nothing of the delicacy of Clark’s deep feelings for great works of art. But he has spun a web of knowledge that clings, not altogether tenaciously to the frame of my mind. As time passes it may fray and tangle, but my hope is that every now and then, when a new fact flies into my head, it will set the web twanging.

I hope also I might have said enough to persuade you to watch Civilisation yourself. But you can’t borrow my copy because I am going to play it again.

(1) The title was controversial since the series could not hope to encompass the whole of civilisation. There is no treatment of the law, and Spanish art is hardly mentioned. Clark was well aware of these short-comings but was constrained by the 13 hour format, which fitted into the quarterly scheduling used by the BBC, and could see no way avoid large omissions. In the introduction to the illustrated book that accompanies the series (which I have greedily purchased), he confesses that he would have preferred a title in the 18th Century style: Speculations on the Nature of Civilisation as illustrated by the Changing Phases of Civilised Life in Western Europe from the Dark Ages to the Present Day.

(2) The only DVD extra is a fascinating interview with Attenborough on how the series was brought into being.

(3) The success of Civilisation also served to enlarge television, as I mentioned at the beginning of the post. The jealous Head of Science Programming at the BBC, Aubrey Singer, stormed into Attenborough’s office and demanded a similarly ambitious series for science. Attenborough, a zoology graduate, acceded readily. The resulting series was Bronowski’s Ascent of Man (which I have also watched). This was followed by Cooke’s America (now on my to-do list). Attenborough himself was inspired to quit his office job to return to the field and make Life on Earth, the first of the natural history documentaries for which he is best known.

Rings of Saturn

It has been a beautifully clear and sunny day – perfect weather for a barbecue. We dined and chatted with our guests as the afternoon turned to dusk and then the stars began to wink in the night sky.

After everyone had gone and the clearing up was mostly complete, Saturn had ascended above the houses across the street. It’s been a few months since last I saw it. I wanted to know if the change in our relative positions had altered the view of the planet’s rings.

It had.

Last year when I looked, the rings were edge-on, a thin line drawn across the centre of the pale sphere. But tonight — just a few minutes ago — I could see the rings dipping towards us, angled so that the sweep around Saturn was clearly visible.

I took a picture with the camera on my phone and it came our far better that I expected.

The view in the eyepiece is even sharper. If you have binoculars or a telescope of your own and are still up, go outside.

Sun Spot

I have been working my way around the solar system with my telescope. The moon was easy to spot. And Jupiter and Saturn were not so very difficult to find, though they proved to be beyond my photographic capabilities. Over the weeks and months, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and finally Uranus have succumbed to my searches. Of all the official objects in the solar system only Neptune has so far eluded my telescoped eye.

Apart from, of course, the big shiny thing at the centre of the solar system: the sun.

I bought a solar filter a while ago and have been meaning to take a look at that most important star.

But what with it being winter, my opportunities for observation have been limited. Now that the Spring equinox has passed and the evenings are lighter, I have more opportunity and today I finally had the time to make an observation.

All I have to say is this: wow.

The photograph doesn’t do it justice. My set-up is a bit basic — just a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 compact digital camera bolted over the eye-piece. It’s rather fiddly to operate. However, those black specks that you can see are not flaws on the picture — they are spots on the surface of the sun. Sunspots.

I managed to get a slightly sharper photograph:

It is marred by a darkening towards the middle. I suspect the optical axis of the camera may not have been perfectly aligned with that of the telescope but it will have to do for now. You can click on the image to see the full resolution. The larger black sunspots are surrounded by a broad rim of grey.

I don’t know a great deal about the origin of sunspots. They are a magnetic phenomenon, arising from surface effects that are due to the intense magnetic fields associated with the swirl of charged particles careening through the intensely hot gases — mostly hydrogen and helium — that make up our local star.

I need — want — to find out more. But once again I have been bowled over by something that for years has been right in front of my eyes, only I didn’t know how to look.

 


Update (18-4-11): Thanks to some kindly folk on Twitter (@AntibodyBoy and @neutrinoflux), I discovered NASA’s and ESA’s Sun and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) which regularly posts images of the sun. Here is one taken at about the same time as my photograph. It makes me realise that my photo is not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.
