VWXYNot? Comment(s) of the week:
SB for "One caveat to “open science” that is seldom discussed is the importance of achieving intra-group consensus on this issue (and the consequent difficulty it poses to individuals wishing to adopt this model in practice, even if they fully back it in principle); I wouldn’t dream of posting any of my findings online because they rely heavily on other group members’ unpublished data.
[...]
Also, my gut feeling is that people who are most heavily invested into their projects have the least to lose from posting the data online before submitting to a journal; if your experiments take years to do, it is very unlikely that someone could replicate them before you submit yours for publication…"
Beth Snow for "My first few papers from my PhD are under my former (i.e., ex-husband’s) surname, with more recent papers under my maiden name (i.e., the one I currently go by). I put a note on my publication list that older papers were published under a former surname, and it’s not been a problem for people reading my CV. Without the note, however, people could not figure out why I had “M.E. Simpson” underlined for the older papers and “M.E. Snow” underlined for the more recent ones. I thought it would be pretty obvious, but honestly, people were totally flummoxed without the explanation."
Massimo for "I am so jealous, I wish I could change my name too, and then tell everyone that my h-index is actually twice as much as it is, it is just that I have been publishing under different names…"
CromerCrox for "Modesty is an overrated virtue. Publication entitles you to a certain amount of self-congratulation."
Elizabeth for "I got married about 6 months after receiving my PhD in 2010 and changed my last name to my husbands (which I also consider an upgrade, went from 6 letters to 9, there’s a very cool looking family crest associated with the name in Norway, and I’m the only one with my new name in Pubmed that I can find so far). "
Bean-Mom for "It can feel strange to still publish when you’re not still at the bench, no? When I held a science writing/editing job somewhat similar to yours, I was offered authorship on a manuscript that I worked very hard on. It was so disorganized that I basically had to rewrite it from scratch–including giving advice on experimental design, figures, etc. It was a really weird position to be in; I’d been hired as a writer, not a postdoc or staff scientist, so it felt odd giving scientific input. But everyone was appreciative, particularly the Very Busy Supervisor who was too busy to supervise. When they offered me authorship on that paper, I turned it down as I didn’t feel I’d quite met the standard for authorship, but also because I thought it was an awful manuscript (even after all my help) and I didn’t want to be associated with it!
And the review that I worked on in that particular lab, which I thought I really did deserve authorship on? Not only did I not get authorship–they forgot to acknowledge me!
C’est la vie. New lab now, working at the bench and writing for myself. Okay, this comment has gone on too long. I just remember how odd it felt to be in that position, and to realize that you can still publish even when you’re not at the bench. (I guess no PIs are actually at the bench, and they all publish!)"
and Frank Norman for "Always good to see your name up in lights.
Maybe you could have put both names (CA Dunn and CA Ennis) on? ;-) "
Post(s) of the Week: The Excitable Scientist for "(Im)perfect role models" (on "the lack of correlation between having pleasant interactions with somebody, and that person’s ability to influence your life in a positive way")
and Massimo for "An ordinary Sunday evening" (buying train tickets in Italy is apparently much less straightforward - but much more hilarious - than in normal other countries)

Oh, and by the way:
a) absolutely no hockey knowledge or skill is needed to play. Just ask Bob.
b) I will once again be asking participants for help in sharing the pool update duties, using a Google Docs spreadsheet to record all scores. The more players we get, the less often we each
have toget to host the update!I’m totally in! Beth’s team of hockey hotties shall rule your pool!
a) no they won’t, and b) they won’t be hot, either :-p
They will be SO HOT… imho. YMMV.
Yes, MM will V
I’m in. Somehow I don’t think it will go worse than the current NFL pool…. and my poor leafs are looking wilted already ^^
Will see what happens in the double header Fri/Sat against my swede team Red wings….
Don’t give up before the season’s even started!
Didn’t say I was giving up. Just a touch of realism in the middle of third week of NFL and seeing that a)Erhoff is gone from Canucks, b)Kabele is now in Carolina (!?), c) Edler is hurt….. the list goes on…
ah well, time to be positive and a silly hoping girl yet again. Maybe maybe the Leafs will beat Canadians in the opening game…(see now what I mean with realism??
)
I’m IN of course and HELL yeah Lavaland and I are the SHIT
Ok, so this year I’m gonna pay attention and make picks for the first month. Unlike last year, where I didn’t do JACK for the first month and a half and STILL ALMOST WON.
You are all SO going down this year. Prepare to be demoted to the minors, permanently.
Oh wait, you said you enabled trash talk on the *pool*, not the *blog*. Whatever.
yeah yeah… talk big there ;P
As the first step of this plan, I have gone back and actually looked at the schedule for the first week. And switcheroo’d one player out (what, no Winnipeg games? Egad!).
Ooh, good call! If you hadn’t said anything, I would have forgotten the importance of checking the schedule before finalising my picks!
BTW so far, only Lavaland has actually joined the private group… I’m not gonna go searching through the general listings for people’s names when updating the scores each week, so please join the group if you want to be in the updates!
Er… I joined…
P.S. Where’d you finish again?
pah.
yay hockey!!
Excuse me Madam, but does this bus go to the station?
Aww.
I’ve missed this.
<3 <3 <3 <—- ironic. But I really have missed this
Are we allowed to thrash talk certain people *cough* Alisha *cough* that didn’t play last year because of he/she was having a baby, because I had a baby and I have a monkey at home. And I”m STILL playing.
yes.
This is my first ever sports pool since my dad used to have me make his picks when I was 7. I chose my fav players and filled the remaining spots with players that had cool names and/or cool hair.
History suggests that this is likely to be as good a strategy as any other.

uhmm, its says we’re all part of the group. how do we change….
I think I’m part of the group… but I can’t see anyone else in the group. Beth = confused!
Huh, weird – you’re all showing up when I go into the admin area, but when I click “standings” all I can see is me and Lavaland. I’m sure it’ll kick in once the season starts, or something…

I’ve (finally) signed up and made my picks. Do you realise how few crap Finnish forwards there are?
I decided to be more patriotic.
it’s in the blood
(brothers and all…. can’t help it. Maybe you can borrow some of the “less expensive” Swedes? Oh wait, you said forwards didn’t you… well, can’t help you then)
Mr E Man is gonna play this year! I’ll set his account up for him over the weekend
For what it’s worth, I can see 10 ppl in the group. Is arkmennis possible Mr E man? (curious
) It’s important to know who you trash talk about, right?! ^^
Yep, everyone’s showing up in the standings now, and Mr E Man is playing as arkmennis
OK, I made my picks last night. The salary cap thing and the ability to change your players every week makes this much more difficult than my old pool!
Also, is this “week” just today and tomorrow? If I want to make changes to my picks, what’s the deadline to do that?
but its not as hard as the sportsnet one, which limited the number of centers, wingers you had. With the CBC all your fowards could be centers or wingers. Not sure which one I like better yet….guess it’ll depend on how I do.
uhm, do I lie about the pick deadline or tell the truth?
well, do you want to win because you are the best or because the people you play against didn’t play??
*…. trash talk bravely before the horrible opening game against the Canadians tonight….*
beth is playing, just maybe not with all the information. Do one usually give the opponent their opponent the game plan?
I’m sure the information must be on hockey pool website somewhere, but I was being lazy and asking here since I figured someone probably already knows. Why, oh why, can’t I just be lazy? =)
I guess Alyssa has decided to whimper out….
Beth – you can be lazy, but what you don’t is you can trust us, we are hockey fans after all
pick deadline is 1pm on saturday – which you would know if you followed me on twitter
I do follow you on Twitter! I just follow too many people and miss the important things (see above re: lazy).
Just getting out of an all-day meeting to say OH CRAP I THOUGHT IT WAS A MONDAY-SUNDAY THING LIKE LAST YEAR GAAAAAAAAH.
I’m screwed for this week, but will do better next week
