Great White Shock

Holy shit, this photo’s real?!

A few people had sent it to me, but I thought it was a PhotoShop job.

Climate change is bringing warm water species like jumbo flying squid further North and into our local waters. I really really hope the sharks don’t follow.
Maybe I’m gonna need a bigger boat.
p.s. this photo is not real.

That is a pretty incredible picture! There were some reports a few months ago as well about jellyfish blooms caused by warming waters that absolutely decimated fish farms in the North Atlantic. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the end of these effects…

Yes, I remember that. Strange times indeed. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing a jumbo flying squid. I once had a fish jump out of the water and onto my kayak sprayskirt, but it was only a couple of centimetres long. If it had been a squid I’d have been buying lemons and garlic on my way home.

Jeff, I skippered a yacht in Northern Ireland and spent some very happy nights in a port called Glenarm on the Antrim coast – it was home to Britain’s only organic salmon farm and I got to know the crew of the farm boat.
Last year a huge swarm of purple stinger jellyfish came up the Irish Sea and swamped the pens, killing all the fish. Nothing like this had been seen before.

My one and only, never to be repeated, taste of jellyfish served only to reinforce the fact that they’re not as tasty as salmon. Pity.
