NN rules. Via a post on the Canada forum, I discovered the Science Canada blog – a rich source of local research policy and general political information that is extremely useful to me in my job, and also helps me win arguments with Canadians down the pub.
Oh, and also articles and press releases for me to moan about on my blog.
Here’s another one: Health worsens after immigration. Here are some quotes:
‘The health of immigrants worsens with each decade they stay in the country,’
[…]
‘Length of stay is also a “predictor of developing cardiovascular disease.”‘
In other words: ‘passage of time linked to increasing age’.
OK, so I’m misleading you for comedic effect. The article does also say that
‘length of stay remained an independent factor for atherosclerosis – narrowing of arteries – even after considering age, sex, ethnicity or family history of cardiovascular disease’.
Possible mechanisms include stress and changes to the diet.
Interesting findings, but it took me a couple of read-throughs to pick up on that most pertinent piece of information. There has to be a way to communicate such important results to non-specialists without having them spend the first two-thirds of the article thinking ‘tell me something I don’t know’.
Edit after re-reading this post: The Science Canada people didn’t write the article in question, it is from the Toronto Star. I hope no-one thought I was criticising the blog!
