Shuffle time

I wonder if my tunes are easier to identify than my books?
Here are the first few lines of 20 songs that came up on Shuffle on my iPod. I cheated a wee bit by skipping any album tracks, duplicated artists, or any artist I thought would be too Canadian obscure to be easily identified. If the title of the song, or a variant on the title, is included in the lyrics, I’ve removed the actual words but indicated why.
Here we go!

1) You sit there in your heartache, Waiting on some beautiful boy to, To save you from your own ways. You play forgiveness. Watch it now, here he comes! He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus, But he talks like a gentleman, Like you imagined [title].
Dorothy got this one

2) There’s no clothes, I can buy, Make me feel like myself, [title]. So I put on clothes, To make me feel like someone else, [title].
3) With so much drama in the l-b-c, It’s kinda hard bein’ Snoop D-O-Double-G, But I, somehow, some way, Keep comin’ up with funky ass shit like every single day
4) Wake up in the morning with a head like “what ya done?”, This used to be the life but I don’t need another one, Good luck cuttin’ nothin’, carryin’ on, you wear them gowns, So how come I feel so lonely when you’re up gettin’ down?
5) Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota, There lived a young boy named [title]
Henry got this one – the video is obviously not the original!

6) Hear that lonesome whippoorwill, He sounds too blue to fly, The midnight train is whinin’ low, [title].
Partial credit for Steffi

7) [title x 3] from your lies, You’re so self-satisfied, I don’t need you, [title] God knows, God knows [title].
Bob got this one

8) I’m gonna fight ‘em off, A [title] couldn’t hold me back, They’re gonna rip it off, Takin’ their time right behind my back.
Another one for Dorothy – get your air guitars ready for this one!

9) (You know this boogie is for real) I used to buy my faith in worship, But then my chance to Heaven slipped. I used to worry about the future, But then I threw my caution to the wind.
Steffi got the whole answer to this one 😉

10) Young teacher, The subject, Of schoolgirl fantasy, She wants him so badly, Knows what she wants to be.
Brian Derby got this one

11) (She’s beautiful, she’s smart, she’s a fighting hellcat, she’s dynamite, she’s [artist name]) People are fine like grains of sand on a beach, The same, But something different about each, So when we [name of band] we talk the truth unglamourised. People are people, wherever you go, Always the same messed up traits that they show. When you meet a good ‘un, Then you feel they glow.
12) I have fallen for another, She can make her own way home, And even if she asked me now, I’d let her go alone. But I used to see her up the chapel when she went to Sunday mass, And when she’d go up to receive I’d kneel down there and watch her pass, The glory of her ass.
Dorothy again!

13) [title] has come to take me away, [title] is mine when she stitches me, [title variant] has found an aching in me, [title variant] has turned her tongue into me, Everyone has been burned before, Everybody knows the pain.
14) [title] in bars of twelve or less, I’m a stranger to the land, To this wilderness, All things are possible, But happen less and less, This is my country, These are my reasons, ‘Cause I look In the mirror, And it throws back the question, And I whisper in words, That beg An answer, Tell me, Can this white man [title variant]?
15) (We’re going to dance, We’re going to dance, We’re going to dance, And have some fun). The chills that you spill, Up my back keep me filled, With satisfaction when we’re done, Satisfaction of what’s to come, I couldn’t ask for another (I-I-I-I) No, I couldn’t ask for another
Christie got this one:

16) (Make it) [title variant], Weather is sweet yeah, boy, Makes you want to move those dancing feet, To the rescue, ah, Here I am, I want you to know yeah, Here I stand. As the morning gathers a rainbow, I want you to know yeah, That I’m a rainbow with you.
17) We didn’t have nowhere to live, We didn’t have nowhere to go, ‘til someone said “I know this place off Burditt Road”. It was on the 15th floor, It had a bolt across the door, It took an hour to prise it off and get inside, It smelled as if someone had died, The living room was full of flies.
18) Remember boy that your forefathers died, Lost in millions for a country’s pride, But they never mention the trenches of Belgium, When they stopped fighting and they were one, A spirit stronger than war was at work that night, December 1914 cold, clear and bright, Countries’ borders were right out of sight, When they joined together and decided not to fight
Yet another one for Dorothy – with help from Brian

19) When I counted up my demons, Saw there was one for every day, With the good ones on my shoulder, I drove the other ones away. So if you ever feel neglected, If you think that [title variant], I’ll be counting up my demons, yeah, Hoping [title variant]
Linda got this one, although Brian D did spot that there was a Coldplay song somewhere on the list.

20) It was a cold and wet December day, When we touched the ground at JFK, Snow was melting on the ground, On BLS I heard the sound, Of [title variant]. New York, like a Christmas tree, Tonight this city belongs to me, [title variant].
Yeah, I kinda did just want an excuse to say “funky ass shit” on Nature Network.
Good luck – and no googling!

  1. Bob O'Hara says:

Well, 7 is I Want to Break Free by Queen.
    That’s the easy one done.

  2. Brian Derby says:

Number 10 is Don’t Stand S close to Me by the Police (Googlefree on my honour) – That one wasn’t too hard either.

  3. Henry Gee says:

I got what Brian and Bob did, as well as no. 5, which is Rocky Raccoon by the Beatles.

  4. Cath Ennis says:

    you are all correct!

  5. Brian Derby says:

18 Is something about Football, I think I can remember but no.

  6. Cath Ennis says:

    Indirectly, yes

  7. Eva Amsen says:

I can sing along to numbers 1 and 8, but can’t fill in the missing title parts of either. Uhm, I think number 1 is something by either The Killers or the Arctic Monkeys, based on what it sounds like when I sing it in my head. But I still can’t find the title.

  8. Brian Derby says:

    Aha – I spot a Coldplay

  9. Cath Ennis says:

Eva, number 1 is indeed by either the Arctic Monkeys or the Killers…
    Brian – yep!

  10. Eva Amsen says:

I Googled number 8, and realized I didn’t get it because I was singing the missing text with not enough syllables.

  11. Cath Ennis says:

Did you have the right tune at least?

  12. Bob O'Hara says:

I know I’m really going out on a limb with this wild guess, but could 3 be by Snoop Doggy Dogg?
I cheated on 17 and googled it – I got the band right, but I was confused because he meter is similar to one of their better known hits.

  13. Cath Ennis says:

Nope! Hee hee, I am evil – #3 is a cover of a Snoop Dogg song. But if you can tell me the name of the song I’ll give you full credit.

  14. Dorothy Clyde says:

    1. When we were young, Killers
    12. I used to love her, Saw Doctors
    18. Altogether now, The Farm (thanks to Brian for the clue…!)
15 is very familiar – but can’t quite place it….

  15. Dorothy Clyde says:

    8. Seven Nation Army, White Stripes
I really need to try and forget about this now till I finish work! It’s very addictive….
But I like that I can play in this one – I’m afraid my reading taste is too low-brow to be able to contribute to the book meme!

  16. Cath Ennis says:

Nice work Dorothy – all four are correct! I’ll add the videos either this evening or tomorrow morning.

  17. Christie Wilcox says:

No, your tunes aren’t much easier than your books… 🙂
Though 15 is ‘the groove is in the heart’, the artist of which I simply cannot remember.

  18. Cath Ennis says:

Indeed it is – and the artist is Deee-Lite, the very definition of a one-hit wonder.

  19. Cath Ennis says:

BTW Christie, as a marine biologist I thought you would have got book #2…

  20. Katherine Haxton says:

With all the clips, are you trying to break NN?

  21. Åsa Karlström says:

see, I’m no good at this. we clearly have very different taste in music. I can’t name one of them. No even one. Sad me. I did kind of recognize grrove is in the heart. Or at least I kneew it was Deelite when you said the title of thew song. Always something so I don’t feel like a [complete] music no-knower.
hm, this makes me want to put a blog post up about my play list 😉

  22. Cath Ennis says:

Katherine, it’s loading OK in my browser, but I can switch to links instead of clips if it’s causing problems, and IF anyone gets another one right 😉
Asa, not even #20? (I’m surprised no-one’s got that one yet, it’s by one of the biggest bands of the last couple of decades). I’d love to see your shuffle list!

  23. Åsa Karlström says:

links? clips? what are you people seeing….. I wonder if this is all because the lovely firewall I am behind doesn’t trust links or clips….

  24. Cath Ennis says:

I’ve embedded videos for the songs that have been guessed correctly – but if your institute’s IT policies are anything like mine, you won’t be able to see them!

  25. Åsa Karlström says:

I had to fix this (cheated), but no Cath “not even #20“. Not really been a fan and don’t really know the lyrics that well. Although that particular album is one of the best ones by them, imho. That and the one before that… and on the album in particular I would go for songs number 6, 9 and 17.
Alas, no hits for me 😉

  26. Cath Ennis says:

That album is the middle of a series of 3 that are my favourite by band #20…

  27. Cath Ennis says:

    CLUES
    2) This song has the same title as a Beatles song, but the two are completely unrelated.
    3) We’ve established that this is a cover of a Snoop Dogg song – the title has to do with EtOH.
    4) The title of this song is rather ironic since it is the one on the list that is the most likely to make me boogie.
    6) A rather depressing title, appropriately enough given the colour the artist is associated with.
    9) The first 7 words didn’t give it away? Really? OK, um, preserved warmth.
    11) Chorus goes “I’m a [title variant] I am, Oh so solid, but when she was bad she was oh so horrid”
    13) Classic 1990s “Madchester” British Indie.
    14) The title indicates the Scottish origin of this band.
    16) British Reggae – that’s got to narrow it down
    17) The song is from the soundtrack of one of the biggest films of 1996.
    19) HUGE clue elsewhere in the comments.
    20) You’re gonna kick yourselves… Irish. HUGE band.

  28. Linda Lin says:

    19) Coldplay? Everything’s not lost..i think.
    20) pretty confident that it’s U2. so tempted to google the lyrics to be doubly sure, as well as to get the title of the track.
lovin’ how diverse ur tunes are. XD

  29. Cath Ennis says:

    Correct on both counts!

  30. steffi suhr says:

ooh, #9 Jamiroquai – whichonewhichonewhichone… from the Canned Heat album.. haven’t listened to it in ages. Is it Canned Heat?

  31. steffi suhr says:

I read your clue afterwards… so yeah. Canned Heat 🙂

  32. Cath Ennis says:

LOL – yes it is Canned Heat!

  33. steffi suhr says:

Any chance 6) is by Cassandra Wilson?…

  34. Cath Ennis says:

Nope, sorry – wrong gender and genre!

  35. steffi suhr says:

I’m so lonesome I could cry. Done by lots of people, but don’t know which one you mean without cheating 🙂

  36. steffi suhr says:

    ..or even with cheating, actually.

  37. Cath Ennis says:

Oh, I didn’t realise it was so popular – this one is Johnny Cash.

  38. Cath Ennis says:

The Answers – ‘cos you guys suck 😉
    2) She Said by the Long Pigs
    3) Gin and Juice by the Gourds (cover of Snoop Dogg original)
    4) I Don’t Feel Like Dancing by Scissor Sisters
    11) Good Girl Gone Bad by Herbalizer feat. Wildflower
    13) The Only One I Know by the Charlatans
    14) Fergus Sings the Blues by Deacon Blue
    16) Sun is Shining by Finlay Quaye
    17) Mile End by Pulp (from the Trainspotting soundtrack)
    20) Angel of Harlem by U2
