Apologies for the delay – we’ve been having problems with our internet and cable TV service that seem to be getting worse every few weeks, so we haven’t had any internet all weekend (I’m jonesin’, man!) Shaw’s tech support number is perpetually busy, so maybe it’s not just us; Mr E Man is off work and trying again today, hoping to avoid the weekend and evening problem of being on hold for 40 minutes and then giving up.
Anyway, I digress. Here are the results as they stood after Friday’s games, when Week 2 ended.
Lavaland’s off to a strong start, with ScientistMother and Modscientist in hot pursuit. There’s not much difference between the rest of us (said Cath, hoping to cover up the fact that she’s joint last with Chall and Mr E Man, although thankfully she’s had a much better start to Week 3).
After some teething problems I think we’ve all figured out that 1) the previous week’s picks DO roll over if you forget to update them before the Saturday cut-off point each week; 2) while the first win-a-car portion of the larger pool started in Week 3, our Week 1 and 2 points DO count in the overall standings; and 3) none of us really have to worry about winning the car!
BTW, does anyone want to volunteer to host the Week 3 Update next weekend?
“they roll over if you miss the Saturday dead line” – this. Well, I’m happy about that since I failed majorly to lok at this this Friday.
As for being last, joint last whatever, it’s nice to know that some things clearly never change… There is something to be said about my NFL and NHL pool… at least I have a heart ๐ (not too much skill though… but lots of loving..)
I know – Mr E Man and I both missed the pick deadline in the Week 1 -> Week 2 transition. I thought it was a Monday reset, like last year, and by the time I saw the tweet from someone (I think it was Modscientist) alerting everyone that the deadline was 10AM Pacific time on Saturday, it was too late.
At least there are three of us keeping each other company in joint last place!
I definitely prefer Sportsnet system over the CBC. I liked that we had to restrict the number of centres vs wingers etc. It made it that much more challenging – not that I’m doing any better.
I’m finding it challenging enough this year, thank you very much!
I do like the starred player component of the CBC pool (you select one forward, one defender and one goalie whose points count double each week); it adds an interesting additional variable into the mix! GO GO GO Danny Sedin!
whatever!!! you’re kicking but this week AND the only reason you’re finding it challenging is bc of the STUPID saturday deadline.
Hm… not exactly off to a flying start (although I seem to be doing better this week). Thanks again for setting it up, Cath.
Regarding Sportsnet vs. CBC – one thing I really, really liked about the Sportsnet pool was that any time you hovered over a player in the list, it would bring up a pop-up bubble showing you how many games that player’s team had coming up. With the CBC I need to keep the schedule open in another tab, which is a tad fiddlier. And, like ScientistMother, I also liked the separate picks for centres and wingers.
The early part of the season is nicely chaotic, since there are really no historical data for which players are doing well… much more guesswork on my part, or opportunity for applying real knowledge of the game (on everyone else’s part). I’m hoping my picks will be a bit more robust in a few weeks once I have lots of data on which to apply my sooper-sekrit trendline analysis prognostication approach. ๐
Either that or I’ll just sink like a rock. We’ll see.
you’re welcome!
BTW, the CBC pool does let you hover over a player’s name to see which games they’re playing that week. It pops up at the bottom of the list of players and isn’t quite as immediately obvious as on the Sportsnet one, but it is there!
Yes I am feeling a wee bit defensive on behalf of my pool ๐
“don’t come between Cath and her hockey pool” ๐
Damn right!
(wanders off mumbling about damn ungrateful bastards)
๐
Clearly I should have read the instructions… ๐
Your hockey pool is lovely and talented, as is its hostess.
/sucking up
Uhm, hi (head bowed) Didn’t mean to be ungrateful (shuffles feet). Sorry. I’ll post the week 3 update. (looks up sheepishly).
oh, look how that worked out!
Thanks, ScientistMother! I’ll send you a link to the Google Docs spreadsheet
I don’t know what you guys are all grumbling about… this pool is FANTASTIC!
This is all much more satisfactory ๐
