I’ve put up the answers to the 5-56 book meme. Whilst you’re all digesting that, I thought I’d give you some more fun for the weekend.
One of the curiosities of science, and I suppose other technical areas, is the jargon that builds up. It’s obviously necessary for efficient communication between experts, but leaves the rest of us mystified. As it’s Friday evening, I won’t go into a long discussion about the use and misuse of jargon1, I’ll just give you some I saw this week for you to interpret:
We retrieved a CPIES array at C09 after completion of the CTD. We are now finishing C11 and will steam to C12 leaving six stations to complete on this leg.
Your task is to explain what is going on. Some of you may know, but that won’t help as I’ll be marking you down for correct answers. I’m looking for something amusing and silly instead.

“will steam to C12 leaving six stations to complete on this leg” does make me think of Edaville railroad and the tour of Santa’s workshop from when I was about 5 years old.
