$270m mission seems a lot of money to look for CO 2 – it’s all around us! I’d happily be paid half that for saying “It’s there! And there! And there too!”.
It’s really a satellite to measure CO 2 but that doesn’t sound so cool, does it?
I just received an email through a mailing list about a graduate position in Frankfurt on sponge evolution.
This morning I received the following text message, at about 9.30am:

My reply:
OK. Hang on, I’ve forgotten that we have a meeting. What’s it about?
Today’s the day when we all blog and celebrate Darwin. I must admit, though, I have a lot of sympathy for Propter Doc’s position, Darwin was not God, and shouldn’t be treated that way. Especially as David Attenborough is God. But I’m a blogger so I’m not going to let this get in the way of a good post.

My present contract runs out this summer, so I’m looking for faculty jobs. So far two of the jobs I’ve applied for have been canceled, thanks to a lack of money. And this week I discovered how competitive the market is.

Much has been said about the US’s new president. I thought his inauguration speech was great, and he’s set the bar high. But after listening to him, I had to wend my way home from New York. It was clear from the airport bookshop that not everybody in the US is impressed with their new president:
I’m now back in New York (returning to Finland and the Beast tomorrow). It’s a good time to reflect on ScienceOnline09, before I fly back and the jetlag kicks in.
A lot of credit has to be given to Bora, Anton, and the other organizers for arranging the meeting; it was great fun, and ran very well (better than the wifi at Sigma Xi). The programme was interesting – there were two that I wanted to go to in most of the sets of parallel sessions. It was a good crowd of people collected together – Everyone was friendly and happy to talk, and had something interesting to say. Having everyone in the hotel really helped, and the hotel’s drivers were great – friendly and always happy to collect us, and happy to ell us not to rush etc. etc.
