2011 Bragging Rights

HURRAH!

It’s that time of year when I start going through the Bragging Rights Central archives of my favourite comment(s) from this blog and post(s) from other blogs – see the sidebar for details – trying to pick my favourite 12 comments for the annual reader vote. Expect the list of finalists and the reader poll some time next week…

..but for now, I present to you: the Second Annual VWXYNot? Awards for the Most Comments and Posts Listed in Bragging Rights Central!

As with last year, the winner of each category gets a $20 (Canadian) Amazon gift certificate, as well as 2011 Bragging Rights (Quantitative)!

NB the most recent comments and posts are currently in the sidebar but not the archives. They’ll be archived at the end of the week and will count towards next year’s totals.

First, the comments:

I don’t think the identity of the winner will be a shock to anyone who follows BRC on even a semi-regular basis, but perhaps the magnitude of Ricardipus‘ victory will surprise you as much as it surprised me! This is the most convincing win to date, in any category; Ricardipus’ comments were listed in BRC a stunning 29 times, more than twice the still hugely impressive totals achieved by Steve Caplan and CromerCrox in joint second place! Many congratulations to Ricardipus, and please email me to let me know which email address I should use to send you your well-deserved Amazon gift certificate!

I couldn’t include the following contributors in the chart without making it look ridiculous, but I’d also like to acknowledge the following commenters:

Two BRC mentions: lin, Frank Norman, Juniper Shoemaker, katebow, KJHaxton, Liz, Richard P Grant, Ruchi, Schlupp, Steffi Suhr, Thomas Joseph

One BRC mention: Anarchic teapot, Biobabbler, Chris, Dr. O, Jenny Rohn, Kausik Datta, Knutty Knitter, Kyrsten, Lavaland, LK, Modscientist, Professor in Training, Prof-like Substance, Ruth Seeley, SB, Seth, Stephen Curry, Stephen Moss, TheGrinch

A HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who commented on my blog this year! You’re all winners!

And now, the posts:

IT’S A FOUR-WAY TIE!!!!!!!!!!

Wow.

Many congratulations to Massimo, Beth, Nina, and last year’s winner in this category, Henry. However, I have to admit that I’m stumped as to what to do now! I really wish I could send you each a $20 gift certificate, but I’m afraid I just can’t afford it. Can I please owe each of you a beer instead?! I stand a decent chance of seeing Beth and Massimo* again in the not too distant future, and since I’ve met both Henry and Nina before as well, I very much hope to see you again soon too!

Of course, if you’d rather have a $5 gift certificate now than a pint later, please just email and let me know, and I’d be honoured to oblige!

As with the comments, I couldn’t include all this year’s winners in the same graph, so kudos to the following bloggers:

Two BRC mentions: Anthony Fejes, Bob O’Hara, Erika Cule, Information Is Beautiful, Kat Arney, Prof-like Substance, Ruchi, Silver Fox, Unbalanced Reaction

One BRC mention: Austin Elliott, Barbara Ferreira, Biochembelle, Dr Rubidium, DrDrA, EcoGeoFemme, Fake Science, Flowing Data, GertyZ, GMP, Hacked IRL, I Can Has Cheezburger, Jeanne Sather, Kalliopi Monoyios, KristiV, PZ Myers, Regretsy, Ricardipus, Robert Krulwich, SciCurious, Suzi Feay, Sylvia McLain, The Excitable Scientist, The Hirschey Lab, The Oatmeal, xkcd

A HUGE thank you to ALL the bloggers I read! Keep up the great work in 2012!

Right, now I just have to choose my 12 favourite comments… watch this space!

*I think I’ve actually owed Massimo at least one beer at any given time since the day we first met online… and when I finally met him in person earlier this year and got to pay my tab, he only went and bought me dinner! How inconsiderate! 😉

oooo… I really didn’t get it done as much as last year, did I. (And never in the blog posts… hmm, guess who has to try harder next year then?! 😉 )

Congrats Ricardipus! That was extremely many more than the first runner up 🙂

As for the $20 gift card, I think I failed with that last year…. but fear not; you can buy me a beer in Vanvouver in the spring!! I’ll email you details, but it would be so fun to meet you [and maybe some others of the Vancouver ppl]. Especially since I haven’t gone to London…

    • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

YAY!!!!! Definitely let me know your dates once you’ve sorted everything out. I am SO EXCITED to finally meet you! And yes, let’s try to get all the Pacific Northwest-based hockey poolers together for the occasion!

    • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

p.s. it gets boring if the same people win every year 😉

  2. Beth Snow says:

I’ll take you up on that pint. Perhaps a pint of the chestnut ale you were telling me about?

Also, I think “Anarchic teapot” should win for the best handle ever.

  3. bean-mom says:

I am trying to think of an extremely witty comment and failing completely.

Thanks for the fun, Cath =)

  4. Steve Caplan says:

Ahhh, that’s typical peer review. The Canadians supporting the Canadians… Bloody favOUritism!

    • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

well, maybe you should try leaving hilarious and/or snarky comments on my posts about Canadian politics next year, and we’ll see if you can beat Ricardipus 🙂

  5. Grant says:

Now I learn there was a competition! 🙂

I’m not surprised Ricardipus leads either! I’m impressed I got five.

    • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

      There’s always a competition!

Congrats on the five – great going for someone who joined us part way through the year!

  6. Nina says:

Ha, didn’t realize I’d written so many fieldwork posts! 😉
(which leaves me well of for next year too …)
Hey, but how about you buy me a vegetarian Caesar when I’m over in the green cycling city where scienctific logic rules???

    • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

Well, I think that one or two might have been about other subjects! I’m looking forward to more Grumpy Nina Specials next year too!

I would be delighted to buy you a Caesar next time you’re over. Let me know!

p.s. there is no such thing as a vegetarian Caesar… unless clams are vegetables…

      • ricardipus says:

That would be a Bloody Mary, wouldn’t it?

      • Nina says:

Didn’t you claim that the only time you’d heard anybody order “ther vegetarian version of thath drink” was a caesar without the sausage-stick (or whatever) in it???

        • ricardipus says:

Caesars are properly served with a stick of celery. Sausage? Ewwww.

          • Cath@VWXYNot? says:

Yes, my vegetarian friend asked for the vegetarian Caesar, but must have either forgotten (or not cared about) the clams 🙂

Ricardipus, I know, it sounds wrong, but it’s so, so right! I’ll buy you one next time you’re in town.

Oh, and I much prefer a pickled bean to a celery stick in my Caesar. Pickled asparagus is even better. Mr E Man made some Caesars a while back before realising there were none of the above available, and used cucumber instead, which was also delicious.

  7. Cath@VWXYNot? says:

BTW, will this be the only post all year on which Ricardipus doesn’t comment…?

  8. ricardipus says:

Goodness me, has this post been up a WHOLE DAY without me commenting? I must have been busy, or something.

*mutters darkly about Notices of Intent for Provincial Funding Programs

Anyway I am well and truly chuffed, and we at Ricardipus World Domination Collective, Inc. thank you. My handlers publicist good self will be in touch regarding said wonderful prize.

Actually, if you just send it to the same “official” email address you emailed me on earlier today, that would be lovely, thank you.

Also – it would appear from the available data, nicely presented with standard issue CYAN (see? I remembered the colour this time!) Excel bars, that we can come to one obvious conclusion:

Ricardipus needs to post more, and comment less.

n=1, confidence intervals not adequately estimated, E&OE, batteries not included, warranty void in the Province of British Columbia, etc. etc. etc.

They call it the “self-censor”, simply because you are too self-conscious of your writing, too judgmental.
